In a recent discourse on the Crypto side of X, also known as Crypto Twitter, Cryptocurrency founders and key figures are outlining what they believe to be or should be Ethereum’s winning strategy and how these strategies could better serve the Ethereum ecosystem.

Kicking off the conversation with an extensive analysis shared to X on July 20th, Omid Malekan, a professor at Columbia Business School, asserted that true decentralization stands as Ethereum’s most important feature, as it is the only reliable defense against inevitable corporate capture and “enshittification” of the technology.

The viable path for Ethereum and other blockchains, per the professor’s thesis, is maximal decentralization, as it protects the network from being captured, controlled, or corrupted by powerful incumbents. However, fake-decentralized networks remain at risk of future collapse.

In response to Omid’s assertion, Crypto entrepreneur and early Bitcoin advocate Erik Voorhees proposes what he believes would serve Ethereum’s brand in the long term. Voorhees urges Ethereum to fully embrace a Machiavellian mindset rather than a communist egalitarian/unicorn approach, which he believes to be Ethereum’s current brand.

“…That is far more the point of decentralized networks… resistance to adversaries, and brutal respect for the explicitly non-egalitarian state of both nature and man within it.” The crypto entrepreneur wrote, tying it back to what he considers to be Bitcoin’s ethos;  “money for enemies.”

In a counter response to Voorhees, prominent crypto investor and Ethereum advocate who posts under the pseudonymous handle DCInvestor, pushed back on claims that Ethereum was communist.

He insists that Ethereum’s overt focus on magic and whimsy, led by the Ethereum Foundation and other parts of the ecosystem instead of integrating a hardened public architecture, is responsible for harming the public perception and adoption of Ethereum.

The crypto proponent proposed a shift in branding—which he already believes to be in motion—as a winning brand strategy for the Ethereum ecosystem.

“It’s time to shift the focus from ‘unicorns and rainbows’ to ‘security which exceeds the guarantees provided by even nation-states, ‘ seeing signs of that shift already, even at the EF.” He wrote.
