The U.S. stock market will not be open on Friday, July 3, 2026. Because Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year, markets are observing the holiday on the preceding Friday.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will both be closed for the full day on July 3. Regular trading will resume on Monday, July 7.
Bond markets are closing even earlier. They will shut down at 2 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, July 2, ahead of the long holiday weekend.
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, making it a milestone Fourth of July celebration across the country.
Crypto Markets Stay Open
Unlike traditional stock and bond markets, cryptocurrency markets do not observe federal holidays. They operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets will continue trading through the July 4 weekend without interruption. Crypto investors will not see any change in trading access.
Banks, Mail, and Retail Closures
Banks will be closed on Saturday, July 4. Most commercial banks follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule. However, the majority of bank branches are expected to stay open on Friday, though some may have reduced hours.
ATMs and mobile banking apps will continue to work normally throughout the weekend.
The U.S. Postal Service will deliver mail and keep post offices open on Friday. On Saturday, postal services will be closed for the holiday.
FedEx will have modified hours and services on Friday and will be closed Saturday. Its Custom Critical shipments and FedEx Logistics division will run as normal on Friday. UPS store locations and domestic ground and air services will operate on Friday, but retail locations will be closed Saturday with limited exceptions.
Most government offices will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. Travelers or people needing in-person services should plan ahead.
Holiday Effect on the Market
Some investors watch for what is called the “holiday effect” around long weekends. This refers to a tendency for stock prices to drift upward before a holiday and ease off after.
The effect is partly linked to consumer spending around holidays and to lighter trading volume as many analysts and traders take time off.
Retailers can see share price movement ahead of the holiday as consumers spend more. Some traders view the quieter period as a chance to make tactical moves while volume is low.
Most retailers and restaurants will remain open over the weekend. Costco will be closed on July 4. Trader Joe’s and Sam’s Club will have modified hours.
The next full trading week begins Monday, July 7, 2026.
