French authorities have recorded a rising number of crypto-linked kidnapping cases this year, fueling industry concerns. The recent infamous incidents add to the previous trend, making the region a hotspot for bad actors extorting crypto executives and large holders.
Police Arrest 200 Suspects In Crypto Heists
The Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nunez, addressed stakeholders in the digital asset community on growing security issues. Speaking to the Association of Digital Asset Holders in the country, he highlighted a spike in the number of related crimes since the start of the year.
Security agencies recorded 77 cases involving kidnappings, extortion, and abduction of crypto holders, a jump from 55 last year. This is a concerning trend because these incidents were heavily scrutinized in France last year.
However, he stressed a more ambitious plan to protect investors, which has begun to yield results. At the moment, over 200 suspects have been arrested, including those from the most recent incident.
“These are serious matters, and your concern is legitimate; the emergency measures taken a year ago have proven their effectiveness.” Because during that same period, 200 people were arrested, either after the events had already occurred or in anticipation of them.”
 
Meanwhile, over 700 users have registered for the proposed identification programs. This marks a significant 11% increase since the hotlines were activated. The recent victim in the Somme region used the service, according to the Minister.
The robust plan involves intelligence sharing with other regulatory agencies. Most perpetrators do not reside in France, making a cross-border approach most suitable. Regulators’ collaboration to tackle bad actors in the crypto market continues to yield positive results.
Secondly, a clear partnership is needed with the Digital Asset Holders Association, with state security agencies factored in. Finally, the Ministry seeks to boost operational coordination between all parties.
Criminals target crypto whales because of the nature of the asset. Cryptocurrencies are more difficult to trace, and a fortune can be held in a digital wallet. Since 2024, incidents have sparked a negative reaction in France.
In March, three armed suspects disguised as cops stole $1 million in Bitcoin from a couple after raiding their home. Per reports, they wounded the victims after making threats with a knife before fleeing the scene.
Last year, the French Interior Minister had an emergency meeting with crypto executives, highlighting several ways the government would respond to the ugly trend.
