Input Output will hand development of Cardano’s core software to independent specialist firms from August, transferring six components, including the Haskell node, the Plutus smart-contract platform and the Daedalus wallet, in a transition the company plans to run into 2027.
Those components are the machinery the network runs on. The Haskell node is the software that validates blocks and keeps the chain in consensus; Plutus is the platform Cardano’s smart contracts are written on; Daedalus is its desktop wallet; and Hydra is the layer-2 system built to raise throughput.
Mithril, a stake-based signature protocol that speeds up node syncing, and developer relations also move across.
“The last stage of the Voltaire era is full decentralization of node and reference blueprint development,” said Charles Hoskinson, Input Output’s chief executive and Cardano’s founder. Hoskinson said he was “extremely proud that we have arrived at the final stage with IO Labs spinning out the Haskell node to community curation and control”.

Partners Not Yet Named
Input Output’s own engineering roadmap sets the programme as “Organizational Decentralization: FY 26-27”, running from March 2026 to February 2027, and stops short of a component-by-component partner list.
“We will name each partner as agreements are finalized,” the page states, adding that timelines and product features are “not final or guaranteed”.
Teragone Solutions holds stewardship of Mithril, and VacuumLabs works on Plutus co-development.
Input Output lists a wider partner network across the stack, including Lantr, Harmonic Labs, SAIB and TxPipe, and says that work runs alongside IO Labs and is “administered through Intersect”, the member-based organisation that coordinates Cardano development.
Moreover, at least three independent implementations of the Cardano node, written in Haskell, Rust and Go, will be maintained under community oversight, according to the announcement, with Intersect and Pragma overseeing formal specifications and development subject to community review and voting.
Input Output will concentrate more of its own work on research and new ventures through IO Labs and IO Ventures.
