Moonshot AI, the Chinese startup behind the Kimi chatbot, is moving fast toward a public listing in Hong Kong after its latest AI model sparked a wave of investor and user interest.

The Beijing-based company is preparing to launch a final private funding round in August, targeting a valuation of up to $50 billion. A separate round that began earlier this summer at a $31.5 billion valuation is expected to close within days.

Founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former Carnegie Mellon doctoral researcher, Moonshot has raised more than $5.5 billion to date. Investors include Meituan, China Mobile, and CPE. Goldman Sachs and China International Capital Corp are advising on the IPO.

The company aims to dismantle its offshore corporate structure by the end of July to clear the regulatory path for a domestic listing. The IPO could happen as soon as this year, though the timeline remains subject to change.

Kimi K3 Drives the Momentum

The trigger for this financial push is Kimi K3, launched on Friday. Moonshot describes it as a 2.8 trillion-parameter open-weight model and says it is the largest of its kind in the world.

The model is built for coding and agent-based tasks. Those workloads require repeated model calls and high inference capacity, making them costly to run at scale.

Demand was immediate. Within 48 hours of launch, user requests pushed Moonshot’s computing clusters close to their limits. The company paused new consumer subscriptions while reserving capacity for existing paid users.

“Kimi K3 has received far more love than we expected, and our GPUs are feeling it,” Moonshot posted on X.

The company plans to reopen subscriptions in stages and will split future memberships into two tiers, including a dedicated coding plan.

Analyst Reaction and Pricing Strategy

Wall Street analysts took notice. Morgan Stanley’s Gary Yu said K3 is “proof of cumulative progress” and signals “an all-round catch-up of Chinese LLMs with US leaders in model size, performance, and pricing.”

Bernstein’s Robin Zhu called it “a home run,” saying it showed China’s top AI labs can keep pace with US frontier models.

Moonshot is pricing K3’s API at roughly 60% of Anthropic’s Claude Opus pricing, but two to three times higher than domestic rivals like Zhipu’s GLM-5.2. That puts it in a different bracket from the low-cost approach many Chinese tech firms have used to win market share.

Alibaba, an investor in Moonshot, also launched its own 2.4 trillion-parameter Qwen3.8-Max-Preview model on Sunday. US export controls on Nvidia chips continue to add pressure on Chinese AI firms competing to scale their infrastructure.

Moonshot says new subscription slots will return as more computing capacity comes online.
