TLDR

  • Nvidia stock fell 1% in premarket trading Wednesday after a 2% rally the day before.
  • Nvidia and Alphabet are partnering with German robotics startup Microagi following its $55 million seed round.
  • Microagi will use Google Cloud and Nvidia’s Blackwell platform to train AI models for robots.
  • Investors are closely watching Alphabet’s post-market earnings for clues on AI spending.
  • Google views the Microagi deal as an “ecosystem play,” with no data exchange involved.

Nvidia stock dropped 1% in premarket trading on Wednesday, giving back some of Tuesday’s 2% gain that lifted the broader chip sector.

The stock has climbed nearly 25% over the past year, but is down close to 1% for the month as concerns over competition and chip pricing weigh on the sector.

Wednesday is shaping up to be a key day for tech. Alphabet reports earnings after the bell, and investors are counting on the results to give direction on AI infrastructure spending — which directly affects Nvidia’s business.

Nvidia opened Wednesday at around $171, with premarket pressure building ahead of the Alphabet print.

On the same morning, Nvidia and Alphabet jointly announced a partnership with Microagi, a German data-robotics startup that just completed a $55 million seed funding round.

The deal will give Microagi access to Nvidia GPUs via Google Cloud, along with Google’s AI models and cloud platforms. No financial terms were disclosed.

Microagi collects real-world training footage across more than a dozen countries and advises companies on deploying robots in factory environments.

What the Partnership Does

Under the agreement, Microagi will use Google Cloud to speed up development of AI models that help robots understand and interact with their physical environment.

It will draw on Nvidia’s Blackwell platform to scale that training workload for commercial and industrial settings.

“Robotics is becoming one of the most demanding frontiers for AI, requiring massive physical-world datasets, accelerated compute and a full-stack platform to turn models into intelligent machines,” said Tobias Halloran, Nvidia’s director of AI startups in EMEA.

Google is not receiving data from Microagi or its clients in exchange for the compute access.

Google’s Europe Push

Marianne Janik, Google Cloud’s vice president for northern Europe, described the Microagi deal as an “ecosystem play” for Google.

The partnership also highlights Google’s push to win cloud business from European AI startups, as competition in the region intensifies.

Chinese tech giants including Alibaba, along with other US hyperscalers, are expanding aggressively in Europe. Several European robotics companies have also come under Chinese ownership or investment over the past decade.

“Of course there’s going to be competition,” Janik said. “We can see it, we can sense it.”

Google DeepMind already has existing partnerships with robot hardware makers including Apptronik, Boston Dynamics, and Agile Robots.

The Microagi deal extends that reach to startups on the software and data side of the robotics stack.

With Alphabet’s earnings due after the close on Wednesday, all eyes will be on what Google’s leadership says about AI capital expenditure going forward.
