What to know:
- The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index prioritizes revenue-generating blockchain networks over speculative investments.
- Methodology evaluates protocol revenue, liquidity, and market capitalization for institutional crypto portfolios.
- Benchmark helps institutional investors gain diversified, fundamentals-driven digital asset exposure.

S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital have launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, a benchmark designed to help institutional investors allocate capital using blockchain fundamentals rather than price momentum or market capitalization.
The launch reflects the growing maturity of digital assets as traditional finance adopts more structured methods to evaluate cryptocurrencies.
Unlike many crypto indexes that emphasize Bitcoin or other popular tokens, the new benchmark follows a rules-based methodology similar to traditional equity indices.
It prioritizes blockchain networks generating measurable protocol revenue and demonstrating real-world utility, offering investors a more disciplined approach to diversified crypto exposure.

S&P Pantera Launches Crypto Index Without Bitcoin
The index screens assets based on protocol revenue, liquidity, and minimum market capitalization requirements. Revenue data comes from blockchain analytics platform Artemis, while portfolio weights are adjusted using market capitalization and diversification caps similar to traditional financial benchmarks.
In the first index, there are 18 digital assets, including ETH, BNB, and SOL. TRX and HYPE are not far behind. In their methodological approach, they seek to highlight blockchain networks that engage in real economic activity rather than assets simply due to their size or reputation.
Another hot topic in the industry is the Bitcoin exclusion. Even though Bitcoin remains the highest-rated cryptocurrency on the market capitalization front, the benchmark excludes it due to its lack of revenues that come from protocols, which is one of the criteria set by the index.
S&P Dow Jones Unveils New Institutional Crypto Index
As Cathy Clay, CEO of S&P Dow Jones Indices, has observed, the index applies the same level of exacting discipline to the evaluation of digital assets as it applies to well-respected stock indexes.
According to Dan Morehead, who is the founder of Pantera Capital, institutions find it increasingly difficult to know how to allocate their money in the crypto space.
The launch comes as organizations increasingly accept digital assets, leveraging the positive developments from spot crypto ETFs, tokenized physical assets, blockchain settlement systems, and regulatory clarity.
It is in such an environment that a need has arisen for benchmarks that measure the value of blockchain rather than its speculation potential.
This index can provide the basis for future investment products, including ETFs and portfolio construction. If it becomes popular, it will have an impact on how institutions build their cryptocurrency portfolios, with greater emphasis being placed on those blockchains that generate continuous economic activity.
What Investors Should Watch Next?
The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index highlights the importance of fundamental factors when investing in cryptocurrencies.
With Bitcoin excluded, an obvious factor that may have caused debate, it illustrates the way the fundamentals of valuations begin to become applied to cryptocurrencies. With more institutions entering the field, it may well serve as a basis for shaping future cryptocurrency investments.
