Coinbase has opened USDC payments to autonomous artificial intelligence agents through its business platform. The exchange unveiled the new service on July 23, 2026. It also introduced agent trading commands and a developer kit for integrating x402 payments into online services.

Starting this week, businesses on Coinbase can get their USDC from AI agents. The company’s payment infrastructure handles each transaction, and x402 support takes care of pay-per-use internet transactions. Businesses can receive, monitor, reconcile, and cash out these funds through a single account.

How Rising AI Traffic Shaped Coinbase Agent Payment Tools

The feature was created as a response to rising automated web activity. In June, automated visits outstripped human traffic on the exchange’s Base pages for the first time.

The company reported that payment systems require human intervention, because of which their services do not work well for autonomous software.

Businesses can handle agent-related transactions alongside their other payment activities. The platform offers rewards on USDC balances eligible for rewards that are not used. The platform’s business page lists a 3.35% annual reward rate, though it may vary by region and change over time.

According to the company, USDC payments carry no chargeback risk under this arrangement. The company does not get involved in transactions between businesses and their customers. The access depends on the product availability, user location, and platform requirements.

This update has added real-time market views and conditional actions to the Agents product. An agent can stream orders, analyze order books of the assets, and monitor price and volume data. Users may set conditions for buying, selling, and order cancellations.

Why Coinbase Introduced the x402 Developer Kit

The Coinbase Developer Platform released the CDP x402 software development kit. Agent payments are possible when added to the API, Model Context Protocol server, or web service.

The pack contains chosen infrastructure and extensions, which saves time for additional payment middleware configuration.

The x402 protocol implements the HTTP 402 Payment Required response code for payments. A service can deliver payment requests to an AI agent that is trying to use its resources.

The agent is able to confirm the payment with the stablecoin and resend the request with payment confirmation.

In May 2025, the company launched the open x402 standard that is useful for APIs, applications, and autonomous agents that should perform payments. In this way, a payment request, stablecoin authorization, and proof of settlement are included in one process.

Amazon Expanded x402 Payments for AI Agents

Amazon included x402 in Bedrock Agent Core Payments in May 2026. Thus, compatible agents will be able to make purchases using USDC tokens. The previous launch was just a step in developing machine-based payment solutions.

The company did not provide the information about the expected payment amounts in the business feature.

They noted that all the updates were made for businesses that receive funds, individuals who control their financial agents, and developers working on agent-based services. Every update is related to a different participant in automated online commerce.
