The discussion will be held at the headquarters of the SEC, Washington D.C., and will be broadcasted online through SEC.gov.

The discussion will be on preparations for overnight trading, market activities, resilience of the system, and the benefits of almost nonstop trading. The SEC further noted that the agenda and participants will be made known before the meeting. As stated by the chairman, Mr. Paul S. Atkins, the move is a major step in advancing the U.S. equity markets.

“We are moving towards a new day – and night – in the U.S. equity markets,” Atkins said while announcing the initiative.

Major Exchanges Plan for Expanded Trading Hours

The investigation by the SEC comes at a time when there is considerable preparation among the major exchanges in the U.S. The 24 Exchange (24X) has continued with its plans to have 23-hour trading during weekdays following initial regulatory approval.

On the other hand, the New York Stock Exchange has proposed 22-hour trading on weekdays, and Nasdaq has plans to initiate 23-hour trading on weekdays towards the latter part of 2026. Public Input Will Determine the Future Phase

In addition to this, the proposal from the SEC takes into account the evolving demands of investors due to the fast-growing cryptocurrency market, where investments are traded non-stop during weekdays. Regulators think that extending trading hours might increase the competitiveness of the US equity markets and facilitate access for investors from different time zones worldwide.

In conjunction with the September roundtable discussion, the SEC requested the public to provide input. Particularly via electronic means or in writing at File Number 4-913. It was announced that all of the submissions will be entered into the public record. Later will be published on the website of the SEC unaltered. It was additionally noted that commenters should not provide any information that they do not wish to see revealed.
