Understanding JP Morgan report on AI-themed ETFs

The JP Morgan Asset Management report highlighted that AI-themed ETFs led inflows among all ETF sectors in 2026. AI-themed ETFs had an AUM of about $67 billion, followed by the infrastructure sector, which had a cap below $60 billion. Each of the five themes had an AUM of more than $30 billion.

This trend was occurring even though the AI narrative had a difficult quarter for the sector’s price performance. Despite the underperformance of AI-themed ETFs, the growth in their cap showed Wall Street was banking on them heavily.

In support of investor preferences on AI narrative, the firm’s chief ETF strategists Jon Maier, said,

Many [themes] are morphing towards AI and the ecosystem surrounding AI.

He says that the trend will only continue.

The report also noted that ETFs were providing more liquidity to the markets than is immediately apparent. This trend was evident, as the long-term ETF percentage of total exchange volume in the US was 28%. In some periods of high volatility, ETF volume accounted for almost 50%.

This showed ETFs were a key player in financial markets by multiplying layers of liquidity.

For instance, ETFs were being traded on the secondary market like stocks, with about $5.5 million in daily trading volume. On the other hand, the primary ETF market accounted for about $6.1 billion per day.

Can AI catalyze the next crypto bull run?

The AI narrative was second in mindshare among all crypto categories in Q2 2026, as per CoinGecko. The mindshare of artificial intelligence was at 11.2%, closely behind meme coins at 12.1%. This hinted that the AI sector could catalyze the next crypto bull run as the leading narrative.

As such, the market cap of AI tech stocks was continuing to grow, as per Token Terminal. For instance, three weeks after launching, the cap of tokenized stocks on Robinhood surpassed $20 million. That is, Nvidia, SpaceX, Tesla, Micron, Apple, and Google contributed to the largest share, respectively.
