TLDR

  • Alphabet and Tesla both reported negative free cash flow in Q2 2026
  • Alphabet’s stock fell 8%, shedding around $330 billion in market value
  • Tesla dropped 18%, losing roughly $250 billion — its worst week since 2022
  • AI suppliers like Supermicro and Digital Realty surged as big tech spending increased
  • The Magnificent Seven lost around $880 billion while the broader S&P 500 finished flat

Google’s parent company Alphabet and Tesla both reported negative free cash flow in their latest quarterly results, sending their stocks sharply lower and raising questions among investors about AI spending discipline.

Alphabet posted revenue of $119.8 billion, up 23% year over year. Its cloud business grew 82%. Despite those strong numbers, the stock fell around 8%.

The issue was cash. Alphabet spent $45 billion in the second quarter alone — $27 billion on servers and $18 billion on data centers. That pushed free cash flow to negative $5.9 billion, the first time it has gone negative since the company went public in 2004.

Alphabet now expects to spend up to $205 billion this year, up $15 billion from its estimate just three months ago. Management declined to give a ceiling for 2027 spending.

Tesla came at the problem from a different angle. Revenue beat expectations, but earnings missed badly. Operating margin fell to 1.4%, down from 4.1% a year ago. Free cash flow came in at negative $1.1 billion.

Tesla expects to spend up to $25 billion this year, more than double its 2024 capital expenditure. Its CFO said spending would likely increase further over the next three years.

AI Suppliers Gain as Big Tech Spends

While the spenders were punished, their suppliers were rewarded.

Supermicro, which builds AI servers, jumped 25% after reporting more than $60 billion in new orders in a single quarter. Data center landlord Digital Realty rose nearly 15% on a record leasing backlog.

Nvidia also gained, rising around 2% and adding roughly $100 billion in market value.

A basket of AI suppliers rose an average of 11% on the week. The five biggest AI spenders — Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Tesla — fell an average of 9%.

What Comes Next

The Magnificent Seven shed around $880 billion this week. The rest of the S&P 500 gained about $165 billion. The index finished the week close to flat.

Chip stocks remain nearly 20% below their June record despite a partial recovery to the 12,000 level on the PHLX Semiconductor Index.

Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Apple report next week. Microsoft sits 29% below its all-time high, Meta is down 25%, and Amazon is down 16%.

Apple is the exception. It has no large AI build-out to defend and recently closed at a record high.

The market is watching closely to see if those companies face the same reaction Alphabet did — especially on the capital spending line.
