What to know:

  • Nvidia reportedly discussed a $250 billion financing guarantee supporting OpenAI’s planned 10-gigawatt Ohio AI data center.
  • The AI campus could exceed $500 billion, with the first 800-megawatt phase targeted for completion by 2028.
  • Nvidia also reportedly explored financing up to $350 billion in AI chip purchases as global AI investment surpasses $700 billion annually.

Nvidia-OpenAI discussions have reportedly advanced toward a $250 billion financing guarantee to support one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence data center projects. The WSJ says that the financing proposal will enable OpenAI to lease a proposed 10-gigawatt AI campus in southern Ohio, developed by the energy division of Japanese tech giant SoftBank.

As per reports, the Ohio campus is expected to cost more than $500 billion, but the financing guarantee from Nvidia will cover OpenAI’s leasing of and borrowing to pay for the project instead of AI chip purchases.

In addition, Nvidia is reportedly planning to offer financial support for the acquisition of AI chips of OpenAI, worth around $350 billion. It could not independently confirm the report, while Nvidia, OpenAI, and the U.S. Commerce Department declined to comment.

Nvidia OpenAI Partnership Strengthens AI Infrastructure Expansion

According to reports, the Nvidia OpenAI financing proposal fits into the company’s plan to develop computing infrastructure independent of cloud providers, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle. As per reports, the first phase of the project is expected to generate about 800 megawatts by 2028 before reaching the planned 10-gigawatt mark.

Analysts in the industry have been pointing out that the development of computing infrastructure is a big hindrance to the expansion of AI, and there has been an increasing need for advanced processors and electricity. Through this deal, Nvidia can enhance the confidence of lenders and ensure future demand for its AI chips. This deal also reflects the trend in which technology companies are increasingly looking at the use of financing frameworks to expand AI beyond cloud investments.

AI Investment Race Intensifies Across the Technology Sector

The reported Nvidia-OpenAI negotiations come amid continued global competition for AI infrastructure. The deal would be made alongside a power allocation deal that will see power allocation for the Ohio facility depend on another financing deal that pertains to Japan’s $33 billion investment in natural gas.

The Nvidia OpenAI deal will, if finalized, help redefine the way AI giants finance their infrastructure projects in the future, thereby reducing dependency on other cloud service providers. The deal also reflects the increased competition in financing, energy, and computing capacity amid increased investment in AI that will cross the $700 billion mark this year.
