As the adoption of artificial intelligence continues to accelerate across sectors, cryptocurrency founders and key proponents are assessing the technology’s potential impact on the broader crypto, blockchain, and web3 ecosystem.

In a sit-down with OKX, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, outlines the significance of the Ethereum network in the advancement of AI agents, while emphasizing the notable roles that the network was designed to facilitate in the development, growth, and adoption of AI agents and the AI technology as a whole.

Buterin, who asserts that Ethereum is becoming the foundational economic layer for the future of AI, has recognized a major opportunity for Ethereum to scale AI agents, models, and programs as they begin operating independently.

These AI agents will interact, transact, and exchange resources with each other across organizational boundaries. A neutral, permissionless, trustless system for negotiation and settlement efficiently facilitates decentralization and enables this interaction. The Ethereum blockchain positions itself as a fitting middleman for this activity.

In the absence of a trustless blockchain, multi-agent AI systems are primed to fall back and heavily rely on centralized corporate platforms to coordinate activities.

However, with the introduction of Ethereum and its promising properties such as permissionless settlements, programmable incentives and trustless autonomy could effectively cater to AI agents.

Buterin explains why AI agents need a reliable source to facilitate trust, saying;

“Can you have more decentralized AI and more centralized AI? And if you have more decentralized AI, that means you have different AI things like agents, programs that are controlled by other people that need to  interact with each other. For that interaction to be possible, you need to have an economic layer.” Buterin revealed.

Buterin further explained that because cooperation is typically based on economic rules, rewards or penalties, and centralized control, it makes sense to set up economic systems that enable interactions between AIs.
