Russia Telegram Investigation has witnessed a significant development following the issuance of an international arrest warrant for Telegram Founder Pavel Durov, who is accused of terrorism by Russian officials. This new step puts even more pressure on Telegram since Russia claims that Telegram was unable to block such illegal actions on its platform.
Russia Telegram Investigation Leads to Terrorism Charges
Russia’s Federal Security Service reported on Wednesday that it had formally charged Durov with supporting acts of terrorism. As per Russian state news agency Interfax, the service had also issued an international warrant for Durov’s arrest.
There were no details on which list was going to be used for the international search. An examination of Interpol’s publicly available Red Notice list on Wednesday found no mention of Durov among the wanted.
This claim is made by the FSB within the context of the Russia Telegram Investigation, where it claims that Telegram refused to delete certain channels, groups, and bots, which were reportedly employed by the Ukrainian intelligence services and terrorists as well as extremist organizations.
According to Russian officials, these accounts were used for organizing attacks, recruitment of members, and perpetration of cyberfraud.
The case shows Russia’s continued worries about encrypted messaging platforms and their responsibilities with regard to moderating harmful content.

Durov Says Investigation Is Political Pressure
The Russia Telegram Investigation comes after claims that emerged in February claiming that Russian officials have filed a criminal case against Durov.
Following these claims, Durov confirmed this in a post on X, where he claimed that Russian officials are using this case against Telegram to create new restrictions on Telegram because of wanting less privacy and freedom of speech on the platform.
He states that Russian officials are making new excuses for targeting Telegram instead of protecting users’ right to communicate privately.
France Continues Separate Criminal Case
In addition to the above-mentioned Russia Telegram Investigation, there is another ongoing criminal investigation in France regarding the alleged involvement in illegal activities on the part of Telegram.
Travel bans that were placed on Durov have recently been lifted in France, enabling him to travel outside the country while still undergoing the investigation.
Now the platform and its creator are being investigated in two countries simultaneously, bringing increasing international pressure on governments and Telegram on the issue of dealing with illegal content on the platform.
