Hong Kong has expanded retail access to digital assets with the launch of XRP trading for everyday investors on OSL HK. This move makes OSL, the first Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) licensed exchange in the city to let regular people buy and sell XRP, all within a regulated framework. Up until now, only professional investors could access XRP trading on OSL, after support for that group rolled out back in December 2025.

It is another step in Hong Kong’s ongoing effort to brand itself as a regulated, crypto friendly financial hub. Since the city rolled out its virtual asset licensing regime in 2023, retail investors have slowly gained access to more cryptocurrencies. With XRP joining Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana on approved platforms, this new addition highlights a growing push towards regulated digital assets and growing institutional involvement.

OSL Becomes First Licensed Exchange in Hong Kong to Offer Retail XRP Trading

OSL HK launched retail XRP trading on July 29, officially becoming the first SFC-licensed exchange in Hong Kong to open up the service to the public. Flash Trade is now available with the XRP/USD pair, and the exchange offers over-the-counter (OTC) trading in both XRP/USD and XRP/HKD. Customers can make deposits and withdrawals directly on the XRP ledger network.

Previously, only professional investors could trade XRP on OSL. By dropping that restriction, the platform now welcomes retail users, operating fully under Hong Kong’s regulatory system.

OSL Group, which trades publicly on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under ticker 863, holds SFC licenses in Type 1, Type 4, Type 7, and Type 9 categories. The company first got its Type 1 and Type 7 licenses in December 2020, making it Hong Kong’s first licensed virtual asset trading platform. It secured approval to serve retail investors in August 2023, around the same time that HashKey gained similar authorization.

This launch also stands out because of XRP’s long regulatory journey. Ripple spent years fighting the US Securities and Exchange Commission over whether XRP was an unregistered security. The legal battle is over now. Hong Kong’s decision to approve retail XRP trading on a licensed platform shows the regulator’s willingness to allow the asset in its supervised market. Still, regulatory approval does not guarantee anything about where XRP’s price goes next. Following the announcement, XRP’s price climbed about 2.9% to $1.07 within the past 24 hours as per CoinGecko.

Hong Kong Expands Regulated Crypto Market as Institutional Interest Continues

Hong Kong rolled out its licensing system for virtual asset trading platforms in 2023 as part of a bigger plan to build a regulated digital asset market. Since then, the number of cryptocurrencies open to retail investors on these platforms keeps getting longer. XRP now joins a relatively small group of approved retail digital assets, alongside Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and a handful of others.

For retail investors, using a licensed platform means access to regulated trading backed by custody protections, anti-money laundering checks, and close SFC oversight. The move also adds some competition, with OSL becoming the first in Hong Kong to launch retail XRP trading.

Meanwhile, institutional interest in blockchain infrastructure continues to grow in Asia. Japan’s SBI Holdings recently rebranded SBI Security Solutions as SBI Digital Practice, aiming to strengthen its blockchain strategy. The renamed subsidiary will now focus on building out financial infrastructure for institutions on the Canton Network, with a focus on implementation support, compliance, and cross-border transaction systems.

SBI already acts as a Super Validator on the Canton Network and says this expansion fits well with its Ripple and XRP Ledger business. SBI Ripple Asia isn’t slowing down, either by continuing its work on payment and tokenisation services using Ripple’s technology and the XRP Ledger.

On top of its trading role, XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, an open-source decentralized blockchain built for global payments and asset exchanges. Transactions settle in 3 to 5 seconds, because of a consensus protocol that skips mining entirely. The network can process up to 1,500 transactions per second, with XRP itself acting as a bridge for cross-border payments and a source of liquidity between different fiat currencies.
