TL;DR

  • About 176,000 ZEC worth roughly $81 million entered Ironwood during its first day alone, representing approximately 5% of Orchard’s activation balance.
  • Orchard can no longer receive deposits at all, while its turnstile limits total withdrawals to the amount of ZEC that was verifiably deposited.
  • Migration remains voluntary, leaving most private ZEC in the retired pool as holders, wallets, and exchanges move funds according to their own schedules over time.

Zcash’s Ironwood migration moved about 176,000 ZEC, worth roughly $81 million, into the network’s new shielded pool during its first day. The transfer represents approximately 5% of the 3.66 million ZEC held in Orchard when the upgrade activated and sealed that older pool after a counterfeiting flaw had remained undetected for four years. The opening surge shows meaningful movement, but most private ZEC has not crossed yet. Orchard’s balance has fallen to around 3.51 million ZEC, leaving the migration’s pace dependent on wallets, exchanges, and individual holders across the ecosystem’s still-evolving privacy infrastructure worldwide.

Voluntary migration leaves most shielded funds inside Orchard

Zcash separates funds into pools representing different generations of its privacy technology. The transparent pool resembles Bitcoin, exposing balances and transactions, and currently holds about 12.5 million ZEC. Sapling, introduced in 2018, contains roughly 582,000 ZEC, while Orchard arrived in 2022 and held about 3.5 million before Ironwood replaced it. Each privacy upgrade creates a new compartment instead of rebuilding the previous one. That architecture preserves distinct cryptographic generations without merging their histories or balances, but it also requires users to move their coins manually whenever the network advances to a newer protected system.

Orchard can no longer accept deposits, meaning its balance can only decline as coins exit. Every withdrawal must pass through the turnstile, an accounting mechanism that prevents more ZEC from leaving than was verifiably deposited. The turnstile converts public accounting limits into containment for a private pool. Although transaction amounts and participants remain shielded internally, the network can still measure deposits and withdrawals at the pool’s boundary. Around 46,000 ZEC crossed during the latest 24-hour period, indicating steady progress at present without suggesting that the migration will finish quickly or follow a predictable timetable.

The process remains voluntary, so there is no automatic transfer of the remaining funds into Ironwood. Holders, wallet providers, and exchanges can move at their own pace, while the bulk of Zcash’s private supply temporarily remains in Orchard, a pool permanently closed to new money. Day-one momentum does not remove the operational challenge of migrating millions of shielded coins. The first $81 million demonstrates that the new pool is functioning and attracting balances, but the larger question overall is how long users and infrastructure providers will need to shift the remaining supply across the turnstile.
