TLDRs;
- Carvana delivered record revenue and vehicle sales, helping shares remain relatively resilient despite a softer second-half outlook.
- The company’s profit guidance suggests EBITDA growth may slow meaningfully compared with the stronger first half.
- Revenue beat Wall Street expectations by 7.5%, while adjusted EBITDA margins declined from last year’s levels.
- Investors are weighing Carvana’s scalability and cost leverage against ongoing pressure on gross profit per vehicle.
NEW YORK, July 30, 2026, Carvana shares showed notable resilience after the online used-car retailer released a strong second-quarter earnings report, even as management’s full-year outlook pointed to slower profit growth in the second half of 2026.
The stock had initially faced pressure in after-hours trading following the announcement, but investors appeared to take a more balanced view of the results as the market focused on the company’s record revenue, rising vehicle sales, and continued cost discipline. The reaction suggested that while concerns about future margin expansion remain, many shareholders still see evidence that Carvana’s business model is scaling.
Carvana entered the earnings release with strong momentum, having gained more than 10% over the previous five trading sessions. The company remains down for the year overall, but the latest results offered a reminder that operational growth continues to be substantial even as profitability becomes harder to expand at the same pace.
Record Revenue Performance
The second quarter was one of Carvana’s strongest operating periods to date. Revenue surged 52% year over year to $7.38 billion, well above analyst expectations of approximately $6.86 billion. Retail unit sales climbed 38% to 197,325 vehicles, reflecting continued consumer demand for the company’s online purchasing platform.
Net income attributable to Carvana rose 69% from a year earlier to $310 million, while diluted earnings per share increased to $0.42 from $0.26. Adjusted EBITDA reached $769 million, up 28% year over year.
The gap between revenue growth and EBITDA growth, however, became one of the key themes of the quarter. While sales accelerated sharply, profitability did not expand at the same rate, indicating that margins remain under pressure despite higher volume.
Margins Remain Under Pressure
Carvana’s adjusted EBITDA margin declined to 10.4% from 12.4% in the same quarter last year. Gross profit per unit also moved lower across several categories, highlighting the challenge of maintaining profitability in a competitive used-vehicle market.
Total GAAP gross profit per retail unit fell 5.5% to $7,014. Retail GPU declined 2.8%, wholesale GPU dropped 15.5%, and other GPU categories were also lower.
These figures suggest that while Carvana is selling more vehicles, it is earning less profit on each transaction than it did a year ago. Investors have increasingly focused on this trend because the company’s long-term valuation depends not only on growth but also on its ability to sustain attractive unit economics.
Guidance Signals Slower Expansion
The biggest source of caution came from the company’s full-year adjusted EBITDA outlook.Carvana projected 2026 adjusted EBITDA in a range of $2.7 billion to $3.0 billion, with a midpoint of $2.85 billion. Based on first-half results of $1.441 billion, that midpoint implies approximately $1.409 billion in adjusted EBITDA for the second half.
That would represent a modest 2.2% decline from the first half, even though management expects retail sales to increase in the third quarter compared with the second quarter.
The guidance does not necessarily indicate a deterioration in the business, but it does suggest that profit expansion is likely to lose momentum. First-half adjusted EBITDA had grown more than 32% from the prior year, while the implied second-half growth rate is considerably lower.
For investors, the message was clear: Carvana may continue growing rapidly, but the easiest gains in profitability could already be behind it.
