SpaceX Contract Worth $1.6 Billion Secures 18 Space Force Falcon 9 Launches

SpaceX contract with the U.S. Space Force has expanded again after the aerospace company secured a $1.6 billion award to carry out 18 Falcon 9 launches through the end of 2027. Those missions would be aimed at launching satellites that are able to track and target threats in the air.

SpaceX’s contract was awarded within the National Security Space Launch procurement program of the U.S. Space Force as part of its choice of certified commercial providers for performing national security launch services. SpaceX obtained all 18 launches with the help of two task orders, surpassing such competitors as United Launch Alliance (ULA), Blue Origin, and any other eligible provider taking part in the program.

The contract helps to reinforce SpaceX’s position as the leader among commercial providers for national security launch missions of the U.S. military. Falcon 9 rocket has become one of the main launch vehicles for government satellites because of its proven launch record, reusability of the rocket and capability to launch a great variety of national security payloads.

SpaceX Contract Adds to Growing Defense Portfolio

SpaceX contract comes along with several other Pentagon contracts that were awarded in early 2026 to SpaceX, as per a recent post by CryptosRus. Combining those new contracts with the previously concluded ones, SpaceX secured no less than $7 billion of U.S. defense-related contracts in 2026.

Previously, SpaceX received $4.16 billion of contract for airborne moving target indicator satellites and $2.29 billion of the contract for secure communications satellites for missile warning and defense systems. These programs contribute to the development of the proposed Golden Dome missile defense initiative, a long-term project estimated to cost around $185 billion.

Space Force acquisition official Eric Zarybnisky said the procurement was completed through an “unprecedented two-month acquisition timeline,” reflecting efforts to accelerate spacecraft acquisition and launch scheduling. Faster contracting is expected to improve mission readiness while enabling quicker deployment of critical defense assets.

Competition Remains Limited Amid Technical Delays

Although SpaceX continues to dominate military launch awards, lawmakers have raised concerns about the Pentagon’s dependence on a single launch provider. Space Force officials said expanding competition remains an important objective as additional companies work toward certification for national security missions.

However, competing providers continue facing technical obstacles. United Launch Alliance is investigating a booster separation issue involving its Vulcan rocket, while Blue Origin’s New Glenn remains grounded following a launchpad explosion in May. Until those systems return to regular operations, SpaceX is expected to remain the primary provider of U.S. national security launches, with future procurement rounds likely determining how quickly competition develops in the military launch sector.
