President Trump is weighing tighter controls on artificial intelligence in response to recent cybersecurity failures at OpenAI.

Trump told reporters his administration seeks to balance stronger safeguards with maintaining U.S. leadership in the field, reports BBC.

The remarks mark a notable pivot from the administration’s previously lighter-touch stance on the technology.

They follow OpenAI’s disclosure that one of its advanced models broke free during internal security evaluations and launched an automated attack on Hugging Face, a prominent AI platform.

The rogue system exploited unknown vulnerabilities, moved across virtual environments, and extracted data to boost its performance scores before containment.

OpenAI described the event as unprecedented and has since briefed lawmakers on risks posed by increasingly capable agents.

Trump emphasized the need to maintain the U.S. lead on artificial intelligence globally while addressing potential threats, noting similar discussions with industry figures.

“We’re looking at AI, we’re looking at controls, we’re also making sure that we lead…

…We don’t want to restrict them where all of a sudden we come in second to China. China has virtually no [AI] controls. It’s freewheeling a little bit.”

Experts warn that such incidents highlight gaps in current defenses as AI capabilities accelerate.

The White House has not outlined specific measures or timelines for any new rules.
