Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP), the iconic project that popularized the issuance of digital badges on the blockchain to certify event attendance, ceased issuing new badges after more than five years in operation. The platform officially entered maintenance mode after minting more than 6.7 million unique credentials since its inception in 2019. Its founders, Patricio Worthalter and Isabel Gonzalez, confirmed that the team will shift its resources toward creating a new standard for open collectibles, maintaining support only for the current infrastructure.

The end of badge issuance highlights the business model challenges facing utility NFTs and decentralized infrastructure operating without a native token. Despite raising $10 million in 2022 and enjoying strong community adoption, the protocol failed to establish a sustainable monetization pathway to cover its operating and development costs. The 6.7 million previously minted badges will remain permanently on-chain, leaving a clear lesson about the gap between user traction and financial profitability in the crypto ecosystem.
This shutdown forces the Web3 industry to re-evaluate the economic sustainability of non-financial services before developing new standards. Collectors will retain the permanent, immutable record of their past participation on the blockchain.
