Bitcoin wallet inactive since 2013 moved 500 BTC, equivalent to $31.3 million; the transaction was detected by on-chain tracker Whale Alert on Monday, August 3.

The funds, which were worth approximately $500,000 when they last moved more than 12 years ago, were transferred entirely to a new address. On-chain analytics platform Lookonchain noted that the move may have been prompted by security concerns stemming from the hack of Coldcard, a popular Bitcoin-only hardware wallet.

Since July 30, multiple attackers have stolen thousands of BTC from wallets generated with Coldcard, exploiting a vulnerability dating back to March 2021. According to Galaxy Research, cumulative losses amount to approximately $130 million in BTC.

The case of wallet 18TExP is not unique: data from CryptoQuant shows a notable spike in dormant coin movement within the same time window.

On July 31, around 6,388 BTC from wallets inactive for between five and seven years were recorded, while on August 3 approximately 935 BTC with more than a decade of inactivity moved — the highest daily volume since March 20.

The pattern of massive, synchronized reactivation suggests that multiple holders chose to migrate their funds amid deteriorating confidence in self-custody.
