Glassnode integrates x402, enabling AI agents to pay for on-chain data with USDC in real time. No API keys, subscriptions, or signups required.
Glassnode has unveiled support for the x402 protocol, enabling autonomous AI agents to request and pay for on-chain data directly using USDC without requiring API keys, subscriptions, or user accounts. This integration marks the first instance where Glassnode’s professional-grade blockchain metrics are directly accessible to software agents, a move that could reshape how trading bots and AI assistants operate in real time.
At the core of this innovation is x402, an open payment protocol initially developed by Coinbase and now governed by the x402 Foundation under the Linux Foundation. The protocol allows any client that holds USDC—such as trading bots, research assistants, or AI agents—to pay for web resources or data in real time. Glassnode users can now access its extensive catalog of blockchain metrics, paying just $0.05 per metric call or $0.01 for metadata calls.
How It Works
Traditionally, accessing on-chain data required navigating enterprise-grade hurdles: creating accounts, managing API keys, and selecting subscription plans. With x402, the process is simplified. When an agent requests data, the server responds with the price in USDC. The agent then pays the fee, verified through blockchain settlement, and receives the requested data without any additional setup.
For example, an AI agent could query key Bitcoin metrics like MVRV or entity-adjusted URPD by issuing simple prompts. The agent pays a small fee in USDC—typically less than $0.10—and retrieves actionable insights. Glassnode demonstrated scenarios such as identifying Bitcoin support levels or assessing altcoin accumulation trends, all autonomously handled by AI agents.
Two Access Paths
Users have two options to enable their AI agents for x402 payments:
- Coinbase for Agents: Agents can pay directly from a Coinbase account, requiring no additional wallet setup.
- Base MCP: For those without a Coinbase account, agents can use Base, a free on-chain wallet. USDC can be added from any compatible wallet or exchange.
Implications for the Market
The adoption of x402 by Glassnode highlights the growing trend towards “agentic commerce,” where autonomous software systems transact directly. This shift could significantly impact how traders and analysts interact with blockchain data. By removing friction from the data acquisition process, x402 enables faster decision-making and broader accessibility, even for smaller-scale users.
x402 usage has gained momentum recently. According to a CoinDesk report from July 2026, over 75 million x402 payments—worth roughly $24 million—were processed in just 30 days. This surge reflects increasing adoption across analytics platforms, developer tools, and payment infrastructure. Glassnode’s integration could further accelerate this trend, particularly among traders and researchers leveraging AI-driven solutions.
Security and Adoption
While x402 is gaining traction, it has also faced scrutiny. Recent academic papers have explored potential risks, including vulnerabilities in payment verification flows. However, its open design and governance under the Linux Foundation aim to address these concerns, offering transparency and interoperability across multiple blockchain ecosystems.
Glassnode’s move into x402 payments not only enhances its data accessibility but also aligns with broader industry efforts to streamline machine-to-machine transactions. Supported ecosystems for x402 include Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, and Solana, among others, ensuring flexibility for diverse user needs.
Looking Ahead
By leveraging x402, Glassnode positions itself at the forefront of blockchain analytics for the AI age. As autonomous trading agents and research assistants become more prevalent, this integration provides a seamless, cost-effective way to access critical data. With flat pricing and no minimum commitments, even individual users can now tap into professional-grade metrics without the traditional barriers of enterprise solutions.
For those interested in exploring the new functionality, Glassnode has provided detailed documentation and examples. Whether it’s querying Bitcoin price levels or scanning market-wide trends, x402 enables a potentially transformative approach to blockchain data consumption.
