Alphabet (GOOGL) shares fell about 4% after the company announced a major leadership change at Google DeepMind. Demis Hassabis will step down from day-to-day management and become Alphabet’s chief scientist, while several senior Gemini leaders are leaving to start a new AI company.

Hassabis Moves to New Alphabet Chief Scientist Role

Demis Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010, will become Alphabet’s chief scientist and chairman of Google DeepMind. He said the change will allow him to focus more directly on artificial general intelligence research and long-term AI strategy.

Hassabis told employees that the growing importance of AGI influenced his decision. Sundar Pichai said the new role will allow Hassabis to focus on “actively shaping the future of AGI” and called the work “vitally important to Alphabet and humanity.”

Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently Google DeepMind’s chief technology officer, will take over day-to-day leadership of the unit as senior vice president. He will continue serving as Alphabet’s chief AI architect.

The change comes as Google continues developing its next major Gemini model. The flagship version has not yet been released, despite an earlier target for a June launch, increasing attention on the company’s pace in the AI race.

Jeff Dean and Other Gemini Leaders Depart

Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le are leaving Alphabet to launch a new startup called Discovery Loop. The company will focus on machine learning, science and engineering research and is being organized as a public benefit corporation.

Discovery Loop has received investment from Google and entered a cloud computing partnership with Google Cloud. Alphabet did not explain whether the departures were connected to the broader leadership changes.

Dean has been one of Google’s most influential engineers for more than a decade. He co-founded Google Brain in 2011 and later became chief scientist of Google DeepMind after the merger of DeepMind and Google Brain in 2023.

Vinyals and Le also played central roles in Gemini development. Their 2014 research on scaling and pre-training became foundational to many modern AI systems.

Google Faces Growing AI Competition

The leadership changes follow a period of stronger competition from OpenAI and Anthropic. Google has also faced pressure from the rise of lower-cost open-source AI models.

Earlier this summer, Noam Shazeer left for OpenAI, and John Jumper, who shared a Nobel Prize with Hassabis in 2024, joined Anthropic. These departures increased attention on talent retention inside Google’s AI organization.

During Google’s recent developer conference, company executives emphasized Gemini’s efficiency and cost advantages. Investors have also been watching whether Google can accelerate commercialization of its AI products.

Bloomberg reported that Google Cloud executives welcomed Kavukcuoglu’s expanded role because of his closer involvement in integrating DeepMind technology with cloud products and enterprise AI services.

Hassabis said he will continue working on Gemini research, AGI strategy and the societal effects of advanced AI. He also plans to spend more time with Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug-discovery company that was spun out of DeepMind.

In his memo to employees, Hassabis said

“I’ve always believed the No. 1 application of AI should be to improve human health” and added that “It’s time for AI to prove its unequivocal value to the world.”
