TLDRs;
- Rocket Lab shares erased early gains and traded nearly flat despite securing a major $397 million Space Force award.
- Investors are focusing on Neutron rocket execution, contract profitability, and the timing of future revenue recognition.
- The Pentagon deal strengthens Rocket Lab’s defense positioning but adds new operational and fixed-price contract risks.
- Wall Street remains broadly bullish, with analysts seeing substantial upside if Neutron and satellite programs execute.
Rocket Lab shares finished largely unchanged on Wednesday after an early rally faded, even as the company announced a significant new Pentagon contract worth up to $397 million. The muted market reaction suggested that investors are looking beyond the headline value of the award and focusing on whether Rocket Lab can successfully execute its increasingly ambitious defense and launch programs.
The U.S. Space Force selected Rocket Lab to build, deploy, and operate satellites designed to track airborne targets. The agreement also includes launch services using the company’s still-in-development Neutron rocket, making the contract one of the clearest demonstrations yet of Rocket Lab’s attempt to become a fully integrated space and defense provider.
Early Rally Quickly Fades
Rocket Lab stock initially surged more than 5% in morning trading, briefly reaching an intraday high near $78.38. However, those gains gradually disappeared, and the shares traded close to $74.50 later in the session.
The reversal highlighted a key issue for the company: while the contract is large relative to Rocket Lab’s current revenue base, it is relatively small compared with the company’s overall market valuation.
The award is nearly twice Rocket Lab’s first-quarter revenue and represents a meaningful portion of its reported backlog. Yet it accounts for less than 1% of the company’s market capitalization, limiting its immediate impact on valuation unless it ultimately delivers attractive margins and additional follow-on business.
Neutron Becomes The Key Test
The contract is particularly important because it ties together three major parts of Rocket Lab’s business: satellite manufacturing, launch services, and mission operations.
Under the agreement, Rocket Lab is expected to produce a series of Flatellites equipped with sensors and low-latency communications systems. The company would then launch those spacecraft on the Neutron rocket and provide ongoing operational support and data services.
Rocket Lab has been awarded a $397M contract by the @USSpaceForce to build multiple advanced Flatellite spacecraft for the SB-AMTI program, and launch them on Neutron.

That integrated structure could become a powerful competitive advantage if executed successfully. It also raises the stakes considerably.
Investors have increasingly focused on the Neutron program, which remains under development and has become central to Rocket Lab’s long-term growth strategy. Any delay in the rocket’s schedule could affect not only commercial launch opportunities but also the timing of revenue associated with this defense contract.
Defense Awards Continue To Build
Since May, the company has announced approximately $753 million in Space Force awards, including contracts for space-domain awareness satellites and suborbital missile-defense testing missions. The latest airborne-target tracking contract is the largest of the three announced awards.
Importantly, these figures represent gross announced values and may include options or work that is not immediately recognized as revenue. That distinction appears to be one reason the market reacted cautiously despite the headline number.
The broader Space Force program is designed to diversify suppliers and avoid dependence on a single contractor. Rocket Lab received the largest disclosed share of the second task order, reinforcing its growing role within the U.S. national security space ecosystem.
