The Toronto Blue Jays have spent the past week reshaping their roster after a trade deadline that sent a clear message about how the front office views the rest of the season.
While several veterans departed, the organization also received young talent that could become part of its next competitive core. And one of those players has now arrived in the major leagues, creating an immediate question in the outfield.
Toronto Blue Jays Look To Replace Myles Straw With Kevin Gausman Trade Chip
After the Blue Jays acquired a young outfielder in exchange for one of their most respected veteran pitchers, fan favorite Myles Straw has been put on notice.
The Blue Jays promoted new outfielder Brett Bateman from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, giving the 24-year-old a chance to establish himself at the major league level.
“Outfielder Brett Bateman, a key part of the return for veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman, was called up from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday afternoon,” Gregor Chisholm reported for the Toronto Star. “He took the spot of infielder Luis Urias, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained quad.”
Bateman arrived in the organization as one of the notable pieces Toronto received from the Chicago Cubs for Gausman. His promotion therefore seems to be about more than simply filling a temporary roster vacancy.
The Blue Jays now have an opportunity to evaluate one of their newest young pieces against major league competition while also determining how their outfield should look moving forward. And that should put pressure on Straw, who has an $8 million club option on his contract for next year.
Toronto Blue Jays Could Replace Myles Straw With New Trade Addition
Straw remains one of Toronto’s best defensive options in center field following the departure of Daulton Varsho, but his offensive production has made his long-term position with the club increasingly uncertain.
“While the Jays will likely continue to mix and match in their outfield, Straw has the best defensive profile of all their current center-field options, although his offensive contributions are lacking,” CBS Sports noted. “Through 100 games in 2026, the 31-year-old has managed a .223/.279/.324 slash line with three home runs, seven steals, 17 RBI and 29 runs.”
That offensive profile creates a difficult roster decision for Toronto. Straw can save runs with his glove, but the Blue Jays need more production from their lineup if they hope to return to contention.
Though Bateman may not immediately solve that problem either, he offers more upside and contract control than Straw.
“In other words, he might become the replacement for Straw, who is now competing against him for playing time but likely isn’t long for the Jays with an $8-million (U.S.) club option that is certain to be bought out for $1.75 million this off-season,”
Toronto does not necessarily need Bateman to immediately outperform Straw, but the team seems to have already acquired their replacement for Straw with his contract buyout looming.
