According to recent warnings from security think tanks and financial watchdogs, bad actors are aggressively exploiting the widespread anxiety and confusion surrounding platform closures to run sophisticated phishing campaigns.

This came in action following the full implementation deadline of the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, a sinister new threat vector has emerged.

The Compliance Trap

With roughly 90% of previously operating crypto firms failing to secure full EEA-wide authorization or winding down uncompliant services, retail users are facing unexpected wallet freezes and account migrations.

Cybercriminals are setting up convincing fake websites and posing as regulatory “watchdogs” or customer support representatives from compliant exchanges. They target users facing disruption, coercing them into transferring assets to “secure wallets” or surrendering private keys.

Research from organizations like the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) highlights that regulatory milestones are frequently weaponized by fraudsters. Cybersecurity analysts are urging investors to rely strictly on official domain verifications and direct exchange channels rather than unsolicited communications during structural market transitions.
