The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will host the inaugural meeting for its Innovation Advisory Committee (IAC) on August 20, during which it plans to discuss the way forward for crypto regulation. This comes as the CLARITY Act stalls, with the U.S. SEC also looking for a way forward in the absence of a comprehensive market structure.

CFTC’s IAC To Discuss Crypto Regulation as CLARITY Act Stalls

The commission released the agenda for the inaugural IAC meeting on August 20, with the first session titled “Crypto’s Regulatory Evolution: From Uncertainty to Clarity.” This session will notably include discussions on crypto regulation, including the remaining challenges to a durable federal market structure.

According to the CFTC, participants will also identify themes for building a framework that promotes innovation while preserving market integrity and customer protection. This comes as the CLARITY Act stalls in the Senate, with no assurance that the crypto bill will become law this year.

The CFTC and SEC have already signaled their intention to step in and provide guidance to the crypto market in the absence of the CLARITY Act. As CoinGape reported, the SEC has scheduled a meeting for tomorrow to consider new rules for crypto investment contracts.

Furthermore, the SEC is expected to soon release the innovation exemption rules for tokenized stock trading to promote 24/7 on-chain trading of traditional assets.

AI And Prediction Markets Also On The Agenda

The agenda for the inaugural IAC meeting also includes sessions on AI and prediction markets. Potential topics for the AI session will include “The AI Revolution in Derivatives Markets” and “The Rise of Agentic Finance.”

Meanwhile, in the prediction markets session, potential topics will include federal and state regulatory perspectives on these markets. This comes as states continue to crack down on top crypto prediction market platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi, alleging that they operate as unlicensed sports betting platforms.

The CFTC has sued some of these states in a bid to defend its exclusive jurisdiction over these prediction market platforms. Gaming groups had pushed for the inclusion of provisions in the CLARITY Act to rein in the sports contracts these platforms offer, which they claim is still sports betting. However, the crypto bill fails to address the regulatory battle over these platforms.
