RLUSD Crosses $2 Billion as Stablecoin Rules Open the Door to Institutional Growth

Ripple’s RLUSD is entering a new phase of growth with XRP Ledger dUNL validator Vet acknowledging that the stablecoin had surpassed $2 billion in market capitalization.

More notably, this milestone highlights RLUSD’s rapid expansion since its December 2024 launch and strengthens Ripple’s position in the increasingly crowded stablecoin market.

Vet described RLUSD as the fastest-growing stablecoin regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). The growth is notable because Ripple has positioned RLUSD for institutional use across payments, settlement, liquidity management, tokenization and DeFi, not simply as another asset for retail trading.

RLUSD is designed to maintain a 1:1 value with the U.S. dollar, backed by segregated reserves of cash and cash equivalents. Ripple also says its reserves undergo monthly attestations by an independent U.S.-licensed CPA.

Therefore, this combination of regulatory oversight and transparency could become increasingly important as the U.S. moves toward clearer stablecoin rules.

What’s happening behind the scenes? Well, the GENIUS Act, which establishes a federal framework for payment stablecoins, is moving toward implementation, with the Treasury targeting January 18, 2027 for the rules to take effect.

Greater regulatory clarity could give banks, financial institutions and major businesses more confidence to adopt compliant dollar-backed digital assets.

RLUSD’s $2B Surge Could Supercharge XRP Ledger Liquidity and Ripple’s Institutional Push

RLUSD’s expansion could also have a meaningful impact on the XRP Ledger. Vet has indicated that nearly $1 billion of RLUSD is circulating on XRPL, creating a growing pool of dollar-denominated liquidity on the network.

With RLUSD also deployed on Ethereum and other blockchains, Ripple can extend its stablecoin infrastructure across multiple ecosystems.

What does enhanced stablecoin liquidity mean? Well, it could drive activity in payments, trading, collateral and tokenized assets. It also gives XRP holders additional ways to access dollar liquidity without necessarily selling their XRP.

Flare, for instance, has enabled XRP holders to use FXRP as collateral to borrow RLUSD on Ethereum, connecting XRP-based liquidity with the wider DeFi market.

The broader picture is becoming harder to ignore since RLUSD is evolving beyond a typical stablecoin. Its rapid supply growth, NYDFS-regulated structure and expanding presence across blockchain networks are increasingly positioning it as a key part of Ripple’s institutional strategy.

If the $2 billion milestone is sustained, it could mark a major turning point for RLUSD, and a strong signal that Ripple’s stablecoin ambitions are gaining traction just as the U.S. enters a new era of stablecoin regulation.
