A live show capture of the Tony-winning smash Hadestown: The Musical takes center stage on digital streaming this week after a strong showing in theaters.

Recorded across three live performances at the Lyric Theatre in London’s West End in late February and early March 2025, Hadestown: The Musical is a genre-defying musical that features a blending of modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz.

The musical — which features the five original core members of the Broadway cast — reimagines two intertwining mythic tales of love involving the young dreamers Orpheus (Reeve Carney) and Eurydice (Eva Noblezada), as well as King Hades (Patrick Page) and his wife, Persephone (Amber Gray).

Directed on the stage by Rachel Chavkin and written by Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown: The Musical also stars André De Shields as the Greek god Hermes. Brett Sullivan directed the Proshot version of the musical for the big screen.

Hadestown: The Musical won eight Tonys at the 73rd Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for De Shields, Best Direction of a Musical for Chavkin and Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre for Mitchell.

The film version of Hadestown: The Musical — produced by Crosswalk (an event cinema division of indie studio Bleecker Street) and LD Entertainment — premiered in limited release on July 24, earning $10.2 million from 1,949 North American theaters for a No. 3 finish at the domestic box office.

To date, Hadestown: The Musical — which has not yet been released internationally — has earned $20.7 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing filmed theater capture in history, according to IndieWire.

Previously, the live capture version of Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway blockbuster Hamilton held the record after it grossed $16.9 million domestically after it opened stateside in September 2025. Hamilton went on to gross nearly $4 million internationally to boost the film’s worldwide box office tally to $20.9 million.

Hadestown: The Musical also won the praise of critics and audiences on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, earning a 97% “fresh” critics’ score on RT’s Tomatometer based on 37 reviews, as well as an audience score of 98% “fresh” on the site’s Popcornmeter based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings.

‘Hadestown: The Musical’ Arrives On PVOD On Tuesday

Hadestown: The Musical will debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Aug. 25, a new listing on Prime Video confirms.

In addition to Prime Video, Hadestown: The Musical will be available to purchase on PVOD for $24.99 on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV.

While the rental price has not been listed, PVOD rentals generally are $5 less than purchase prices, so viewers can expect to rent Hadestown: The Musical for 48 hours for $19.99.
