Micron Opens Boise Training Center to Build Chip Workforce

Micron opened the 60,000-square-foot Micron Training Center near its existing Boise operations. The facility gives new employees practical preparation before they begin working inside semiconductor fabrication plants. Micron designed the center to shorten onboarding periods while improving technical knowledge across its expanding workforce.

The center includes up to 20 semiconductor process tools that recreate important parts of a working fabrication environment. Workers can train using equipment similar to machinery they will later operate during production. Micron can prepare employees for manufacturing responsibilities before they enter active production areas.

Applied Materials, Lam Research, SCREEN, Kokusai Electric, and Tokyo Electron supported equipment installation at the facility. These technology suppliers will also use the center for practical training involving their manufacturing systems. Consequently, Micron expects the shared training structure to support faster equipment deployment and stronger operational readiness.

Education Partnerships Expand Semiconductor Career Pathways

Micron also expanded its partnership with the College of Western Idaho through the new Boise facility. Starting this fall, CWI will provide selected semiconductor and engineering programs directly inside the training center. Students can therefore gain technical experience while working with equipment connected to modern semiconductor manufacturing.

CWI will offer Advanced Mechatronics Engineering Technology and Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology programs at the new location. The college will continue offering related courses at its Nampa campus alongside the Boise programs. Micron will also use the center for technical instruction within its Registered Apprenticeship Program.

Micron and the U.S. Department of Commerce provided $3 million to support the CWI partnership. The funding covers educator compensation, classroom facilities, and specialized equipment required for technical instruction. As a result, the partnership links classroom education more directly with practical semiconductor manufacturing skills.

$250 Billion Expansion Supports Long-Term US Manufacturing Plans

The training center supports Micron’s plan to invest more than $250 billion in American semiconductor manufacturing and research. Micron plans to expand domestic production capacity while developing workers needed for advanced memory manufacturing. The company says its broader investment program could support more than 90,000 American jobs.

Micron also continues expanding its registered apprenticeship program as part of its workforce strategy. The company recently recognized its sixth Boise apprenticeship cohort, which represents its largest group in the city. Micron aims to reach triple-digit apprenticeship enrollment by the end of fiscal 2027.

The apprenticeship program combines paid employment with structured technical education through partnerships with local organizations. Micron developed the program with CWI and the Idaho Manufacturing Alliance to strengthen practical career pathways. Meanwhile, Idaho wants to double registered apprenticeships statewide by 2029 as employers expand skilled workforce programs.
