What to know:

  • Ondo Finance’s tokenized stocks reached $1 billion in value within eight months, faster than stablecoins and tokenized Treasuries.
  • Tokenized equities are gaining market share, with growing trading activity and more than 440 tokenized stocks and ETFs available on Ondo Stocks.
  • Regulation remains a key challenge, as custody, investor protection, disclosure, and market-access rules will shape the sector’s long-term growth.

Tokenized stocks are accelerating as blockchain-based representations of equities gain traction across global markets. Ondo Finance says its stock platform reached $1 billion in tokenized value faster than earlier asset classes, highlighting a shift toward active onchain equity markets.

Tokenized Stocks Reach $1 Billion Faster Than Earlier Assets

Ondo Finance said tokenized stocks reached $1 billion in about eight months. Its comparison puts stablecoins at roughly three years and tokenized Treasuries at about 18 months, showing faster growth in equity products.

Ondo Finance reported that Ondo Stocks had $1.01 billion in total value locked as of August 14, with more than 440 tokenized stocks and ETFs available. It also reported $27 billion in cumulative trading volume since launch.

Tokenized Stocks Gain Market Share as Trading Activity Rises

The growth is not limited to one platform. The Block reported on August 17 that tokenized equities represented about 15% of the tokenized-stock market, with total market capitalization near $2.8 billion. That share was three times higher than at the start of 2026.

This matters because tokenized stocks can extend trading beyond traditional market hours while enabling blockchain-based settlement. Investors must distinguish between tokens representing economic interests and direct ownership of securities, since rights depend on product structure and jurisdiction.

Tokenized Stocks Face Regulation and Investor Access Limits

Regulation remains a major factor in determining how far the sector can expand. Ondo Finance said its products are currently offered outside the United States, while U.S. regulatory developments could influence access for American investors.

The issue affects issuers, brokers, exchanges, investors and blockchain networks. Greater regulatory clarity could encourage financial institutions to bring equities onchain, but custody, investor protection, disclosure and trading requirements will determine which models can operate at scale.

Tokenized Stocks Could Reshape Global Equity Market Access

Ondo Finance managing director John Hoffman told The Block that the development resembles the early evolution of exchange-traded funds. “Stablecoins took three years to reach $1 billion. Tokenized treasuries took 18 months to reach $1 billion. And Ondo Stocks did that in eight months,” Hoffman said.

The next test is whether rapid growth produces durable liquidity and broader participation. Ondo Finance reported $27 billion in cumulative trading volume and more than 200,000 ecosystem holders, but sustained adoption will depend on regulation, product quality, and demand. For traditional finance, the trend signals growing pressure to evaluate blockchain rails for distributing equity products.
