The Philadelphia Phillies have little room for error as they chase down the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, with every remaining series carrying significant postseason implications.
Philadelphia has surged at exactly the right time. The Phillies entered the final weeks of the regular season riding a nine-game winning streak and, even though that came to an end on Monday against the Seattle Mariners, that surge dramatically tightening the division race while also strengthening the team’s position in the NL Wild Card picture.
“The Atlanta Braves saw their lead in the NL East whittled down to three games by the red-hot Philadelphia Phillies, potentially setting the stage for a competitive division race we didn’t think we’d have down the stretch,” Steve Gardner wrote for USA Today. “On the wave of their current nine-game winning streak, the Phils dramatically improved their playoff position over the past week, gaining serious ground on the Braves and moving into the NL’s second wild-card spot with five weeks remaining in the regular season.”
That makes Philadelphia’s upcoming series in Arizona particularly interesting, especially with Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte set to return in time to challenge the Phillies ascension in the standings.
Philadelphia Phillies Get Unfortunate Ketel Marte Update Before Arizona Diamondbacks Series
Marte has been at the center of an unusual saga, which began with an unexplained absence before a matchup with the Boston Red Sox and escalated after he was spotted at a casino.
“The Ketel Marte saga took another turn Friday as photos surfaced on social media showing the Diamondbacks second baseman at a local casino during the team’s home game against the Reds,” Mike Axisa reported for CBS Sports. “Marte is currently on the injured list with a knee issue. He was initially placed on the restricted list after failing to show up for a game against the Red Sox in Boston on Monday.”
Though Marte went viral for spending his recovery time at a casino after leaving his team, the Diamondbacks have indicated that he will be welcomed back to the lineup when he’s healthy. And the Phillies have no learned they can expect that return to come when they face the Diamondbacks at the start of next week.
“Ketel Marte is tentatively expected to be activated next Tuesday, when the D-backs open their series against the Phillies in Arizona,” MLB insider Francys Romero reported on X. “The infielder began his knee rehab last Friday in Arizona, putting him on track for a potential return.”
The timing adds an extra challenge for a Phillies team looking to make up some ground in the division race with time running out.
Philadelphia Phillies Get Ketel Marte Update At Critical Juncture
Marte’s potential return would give the Diamondbacks one of its most accomplished players back in the lineup, even if some teammates hold hard feelings over his sudden disappearance. He finished third in NL MVP voting in 2024 and has made an All-Star and won a Silver Slugger Award in both 2024 and 2025.
For the Phillies, the objective is straightforward: keep winning and put pressure on Atlanta. But the upcoming trip to Arizona could present an additional challenge if Marte does return as expected.
