SpaceX plans to invest $100 billion in a new Louisiana launch complex that could become its largest Starship facility and eventually support thousands of flights per year.

The project, called Starbase Louisiana, will be built on roughly 125,000 acres in Vermilion Parish. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted for as early as 2029, according to Louisiana officials.

The announcement comes as SpaceX increasingly shifts its long-term strategy toward Starship. Elon Musk recently outlined plans to eventually wind down Falcon rockets once Starship reaches reliable, high-frequency operations, a transition that has already become an important issue for SPCX investors.

Louisiana Site Targets Massive Launch Capacity

At full buildout, Starbase Louisiana is expected to include five launch complexes, each with two pads and its own propellant farm. Additional infrastructure will include methane production, power generation, vehicle processing and employee housing.

Musk has said the facility could eventually operate more than a dozen launch towers and support over 30 Starship flights per day. That would put the site at the center of SpaceX’s effort to make reusable heavy-lift launches routine.

The project is also designed to support Starlink expansion, Moon and Mars missions and SpaceX’s growing interest in orbital computing infrastructure. Reuters reported that the site could eventually support satellite deployments tied to the company’s plans for large-scale AI infrastructure in orbit.

SpaceX Project Brings Jobs and Local Payments

Louisiana expects the development to create 3,000 direct jobs over 10 years at an average annual salary of $92,600. Another 8,100 indirect jobs are projected across the Acadiana region.

SpaceX will also participate in a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement. The company is expected to pay Vermilion Parish $25 million annually for 25 years, plus $20 million upfront, generating more than $820 million in local payments over the life of the agreement.

Starship Becomes More Important to SpaceX Valuation

The Louisiana expansion adds another large capital commitment just weeks after SpaceX reported second-quarter revenue of $7.81 billion, up 92% year over year. Its first public earnings also showed adjusted EBITDA rising 191% to $3.54 billion. That strong earnings growth has kept attention on whether SpaceX can turn aggressive spending into sustained cash generation.

Wall Street is also assigning increasing value to businesses beyond rockets. JPMorgan recently maintained a $240 target for SpaceX, with much of its bullish case tied to the company’s expanding AI business.

For investors, Starbase Louisiana raises the scale of both the opportunity and the execution risk. SpaceX is betting that Starship can move from experimental launches to industrial-scale operations, and that demand will be large enough to justify one of the biggest infrastructure investments in the aerospace industry.
