A long-dormant Bitcoin whale has suddenly resurfaced after more than 14 years, moving 40 BTC worth approximately $3.14 million in a transaction that has drawn attention across the crypto market.

The Bitcoin was originally received on May 28, 2012, when the cryptocurrency was still in its early stages and trading at only a few dollars per coin. The wallet then remained inactive for roughly 14.2 years before the coins were moved.

According to blockchain data from Galaxy Research, the recipient of the transfer was Boerse Stuttgart Digital, a German crypto custody services provider. However, the wallet owner’s identity has not been established, leaving the reason for the transfer unclear.

The holding’s value has changed dramatically since the coins first entered the wallet. At roughly $5 per BTC in 2012, the 40 BTC would have been worth only about $200. At the time of the recent transfer, however, the same stash was valued at approximately $3.14 million.

Additionally, the transfer represents an extraordinary increase in value over the holding period. Galaxy Research estimated the realized profit at around $3.16 million, equivalent to a gain of roughly 1.54 million percent.

The movement also adds to a recent wave of activity involving Bitcoin wallets that have remained untouched for more than a decade. Such transactions often attract attention because early Bitcoin holders can sit on substantial unrealized gains after years of inactivity.

Nonetheless, the transfer does not necessarily mean the whale is preparing to sell. Moving coins to a custody or exchange-related address can precede a sale, but it can also reflect a change in custody arrangements or other portfolio activity. The wallet’s next transactions could therefore provide a clearer indication of the holder’s intentions.

The timing is notable given Bitcoin’s recent price performance. Bitcoin traded largely sideways Thursday as the market digested its latest rally. Notably, the world’s largest cryptocurrency rose almost 12% over the past week, keeping attention on large-holder activity as traders assess whether the recent strength can continue.

At the same time, movements from wallets dormant since Bitcoin’s early years can carry added significance. While a 40 BTC transfer is relatively small compared with Bitcoin’s overall market size, the age of the coins makes the transaction notable and could fuel speculation that other long-term holders may also move their assets.

At press time, BTC was trading at $78,175, up 1.33% over the past 24 hours.
