One Deftones album stands out in the group’s discography as not just hugely commercially successful, but the kind of project that has managed to maintain the public’s interest for decades. The band released Around the Fur, its sophomore set, back in 1997, and it remains a favorite among American listeners to this day.
Amazingly, even after Deftones delivered several more projects – including returning last year with the long-awaited Private Music – Around the Fur continues to perform well. More than a quarter-century after it first reached the charts, the album rises everywhere, returns to one ranking and brings the Grammy-winning outfit to a landmark it has never seen before.
Around the Fur Reaches One Year on the Billboard 200
Around the Fur hits 52 weeks on the Billboard 200 this frame, and as it does, the project becomes the first Deftones album to spend exactly a year on the ranking of the most-consumed projects in the United States. The set surges more than 40 spaces this frame, stepping up from No. 193 to No. 151.
Luminate reports that Around the Fur shifted 10,650 equivalent units in the most recent tracking period. That figure is up by about 1,300 units when compared to the frame before.
Amazingly, several thousand of those came from actual purchases. There are plenty of much newer releases that cannot sell that many copies on vinyl, CD and download stores in a single tracking period despite intense promotion, but Around the Fur continues to do so decades after it first became a bestseller.
Around the Fur Is Deftones’ Longest-Charting Album
Around the Fur is easily Deftones’ longest-charting release on the Billboard 200. White Pony ranks as the group’s second-longest-running effort with 40 frames somewhere on the tally, while Koi No Yokan follows with 15. Deftones’ self-titled album and Diamond Eyes are tied behind it with 14 weeks on the roster apiece.
Deftones’ Longest-Running Album Was Never a Top 20 Win
Around the Fur is both Deftones’ longest-charting set on the Billboard 200 and also one of the group’s lowest-peaking releases. The album debuted at No. 29 in November 1997 and has never climbed any higher.
Only one Deftones project has stalled in a lower position. B-Sides & Rarities is the group’s only release to miss the top 40 entirely. The collection peaked on the albums chart at No. 43 more than 20 years ago. Around the Fur has now managed a full year on the Billboard 200, though those 52 appearances have been spread out across nearly three decades.
Around the Fur Returns to Another Billboard Chart
Around the Fur can be located on four Billboard charts this week, and it improves its placement on all of them simultaneously. This week, the set breaks back into the top 10 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, where it vaults to No. 9. Deftones also gain ground on both the Top Album Sales tally and the Billboard 200, where Around the Fur improves to Nos. 21 and 151, respectively. The full-length even manages to return to the Top Rock & Alternative Albums ranking, where it resettles at No. 42.
Deftones Celebrates a Year on Three Charts
Around the Fur has now spent at least 52 weeks on three of the four Billboard rankings where it appears in the U.S. this frame. In addition to its newly-reached 52-week run on the Billboard 200, the album has managed 70 frames on the Top Album Sales chart and an enormous 127 turns on the Top Hard Rock Albums roster.
The only tally where the CD has yet to make it to a full year is the Top Rock & Alternative Albums ranking. Around the Fur returns for its thirty-fifth week, but whether it will hit 52 is unclear.
