What Happens In Season 2 Of ‘Adults?’

Season two of Adults focuses more heavily on the interpersonal dynamics of the core group. The first season ended with Paul Baker and Anton getting married so the former could stay in the country, while also setting up a love triangle involving the duo and Issa, Paul Baker’s girlfriend.

At the halfway point of season two, during episode four, Paul Baker and Issa break up because they’re not really on the same page. It’s not the only breakup this season — Samir and Carly (Rachel Marsh) also split after realizing that a long-distance relationship isn’t feasible. Elsewhere, Billie embraces her casual-hookup era, while Issa struggles to get back into the dating scene after her breakup. As for Anton, he finds himself developing deeper romantic feelings for Paul Baker.

It all culminates in the season two finale (“Vote for Paul Baker”), where Paul Baker runs for president of the Bayside Terrace Homeowners Association. By doing so, he unintentionally puts the group in danger after the incumbent president’s daughter, Nina Adler (Zosia Mamet), threatens to report them for violating a zoning rule that prohibits three or more unrelated adults from living under the same roof. To keep things as they are at home, the group rallies to convince the locals not to vote for Paul Baker, resulting in his loss.

On election day, Issa realizes that Anton has real feelings for Paul Baker and encourages him to pursue them. Anton initially denies this, but eventually admits that it’s embarrassing to love someone. Anton also doesn’t want to cross that line because Issa used to date Paul Baker, but she assures Anton it doesn’t matter because their friendship will always come first, regardless of the relationships and heartbreaks they face.

Unbeknownst to Issa and Anton, their heart-to-heart is broadcast live on the news as part of election-night coverage from the library where voting is taking place.

Paul Baker sees this on TV and is surprised by Anton’s admission of his feelings. Issa and Anton run home just in time for the gang to see that Paul Baker lost the election by one vote. While everyone cheers, Anton approaches Paul Baker and kisses him.

That night, Issa sneaks Margaux (Mia Fowler), a librarian she hit it off with earlier in the finale, into her room to hook up. While in the hallway, they hear noises coming from Paul Baker and Samir’s room. Issa, assuming it’s Paul Baker and Anton in there, explains that two of her roommates are hooking up and she’s “actually really happy about it.”

Issa and Margaux go to her room, and in a major plot twist, it’s revealed that Samir and Billie are in the room, not Paul Baker and Anton.

Has ‘Adults’ Been Renewed For Season 3?

Anton and Paul Baker’s season two ending was expected, as the whole season had been building toward it. Billie and Samir’s secret hookup was a bit more shocking, but it wasn’t entirely out of left field.

In a hasty decision, Samir previously planned to move to Seattle to be with Carly. Of course, that changed when they broke up, but Billie’s fear of the group changing and growing distant may have led her to tap into romantic feelings for her childhood friend. Whether it was a spur-of-the-moment decision they’ll regret or the start of a new relationship remains to be seen.

FX hasn’t renewed Adults for a third season yet, but series co-creator Rebecca Shaw told Entertainment Weekly that she and co-creator Ben Kronengold have “many, many plans,” should the show get renewed.

In a separate interview with Swoon, Kronengold teased that Billie and Samir’s hookup will “have consequences for everyone.”

“We understand why all four of those people had the nights that they had in our finale, but I think now we really get to say, ‘What next?’ What is next for Billie and Samir is going to look really different than what is next for Anton and Paul Baker,” Shaw told TheWrap. “They all made decisions that they can’t take back, which is always a really fun place to find ourselves.”

Season two of Adults is streaming on Hulu.
