The LSE Payward Partnership will see some of the biggest companies in the UK going up on the blockchain through Payward’s tokenized equity solution in what will be the connection between traditional capital markets and Payward’s platform.

The 100 biggest companies on the London Stock Exchange are to go live on Payward’s xStocks platform within the next few weeks. The tokens on the blockchain will have a one-to-one backing from the underlying shares and will run 24/7 on the crypto exchanges that support them.

LSE Payward Partnership Expands Tokenized Stock Access

The LSE Payward Partnership is indicative of the emerging interest in tokenization of conventional assets. Financial firms have been increasingly looking at creating blockchain tokens for conventional assets like stocks, bonds, commodities, and others.

Conventional stocks get traded via conventional exchanges, which use the services of brokers and go through the process of clearing and settling the transaction. Blockchain tokens of the same stocks can, however, be transferred in blockchain networks on a round-the-clock basis.

According to Payward, xStocks has handled a total volume in excess of $40 billion in less than a year. Out of this volume, almost $20 billion was settled on-chain. At present, xStocks has more than 200,000 holders.

LSE Payward Partnership Targets 110+ Countries

The LSE Payward Partnership may provide UK-listed firms access to investment from more than 110 nations via the use of blockchain technology infrastructure. XStocks, however, cannot be accessed by investors in the UK at this moment.

If regulatory approval is gained, the LSE intends to list xStocks and facilitate trading of xStocks on LSE 24, which is its proposed 24-hour trading facility. This facility will eventually enable tokenized stocks from the US, UK, EU and Hong Kong, as well as other asset classes.

Additionally, there is an opportunity that will be explored by the firms to permit issuance of equity tokens by LSE members on-chain. Such tokens would have the same rights and fungibility properties as normal shares through use of blockchain technology.

LSE Payward Partnership Connects Traditional Finance With Crypto

An example of how traditional financial markets and blockchain businesses are collaborating is the LSE Payward Partnership.

According to Payward co-CEO Arjun Sethi, the collaboration is an indication of moving away from the perception that there has to be competition between cryptocurrencies and conventional finance.

For her part, LSEG CEO Julia Hoggett emphasized that tokenization needs to evolve without compromising investors’ rights and trust in the market.

This development might also enable new use cases involving the tokens. Companies are trying to figure out how to leverage tokens from stocks and other assets as collateral in their lending or credit offerings.

As the LSE Payward Partnership progresses, regulatory clearance will still be an essential element. Assuming that everything goes as planned, the initiative will become another big connection between capital markets and blockchain technology.
