Apple has sued OpenAI for claiming that the ChatGPT development company has committed trade secret misappropriation through the actions of ex- employees of Apple who currently work there.
The OpenAI accused the lawsuit as a retaliatory one in which Apple is trying to hinder its AI hardware ambitions such as creating a consumer product in collaboration with the former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
Talent Dispute and Trade Secret Theft
The suit includes an objection over confidentiality agreements by those engineers who worked on Apple chips and on-device AI. OpenAI states they have been attracted by the hardware opportunities and the compensation packages; over 400 Apple engineers decided to voluntarily give their service.

The confrontation is important for a blockchain that consumer-side processing of the model via hardware lowers a big dependence on cloud services of the data storage. Such a transition would be quite aligned with the philosophy of Web3 on the idea of having control over one’s own data as well as keeping inference private.

Per Messari’s tokenized compute revenue data, total tokenized compute revenue year-to- date is currently at about $1.8 billion. As the focus of venture investment slowly moves towards decentralized AI, litigation surrounding these topics is expected in the coming year.

The first AI device from OpenAI-Ive will be unveiled in mid-2026 at the earliest. At the same time, it will be interesting to see how judges rule on AI systems for IP law and also how different types of legislation will influence labor practices in the development cycle.
