The match-play event, typically played every two years, is being played this year after just conducting the event last year at Cypress Point in California. In last year’s event, the United States defeated Great Britain and Ireland 17-9. The two main governing bodies in golf, the United States Golf Association(USGA) and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews(R&A) decided to move the event to even years in order to avoid scheduling issues with upcoming World Amateur Team Championships. This will be the 51st playing of the Walker Cup. The United States has dominated the event since its inception, holding a 40-9-1 overall record. Great Britain and Ireland will look to turn that tide on home soil this week at Lahinch. Lahinch Golf Club Dubbed “the St. Andrews of Ireland” by many, Lahinch is one of the great golf courses in the world. Originally created by locals in 1892, Lahinch was visited by Old Tom Morris in 1894. They commissioned him to make a full eighteen hole golf course on the beautiful terrain. Morris would say that at the time it was the finest natural links course he had seen.
