The Dog Stars, director Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic tale starring Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin, is projected to drop big in its second weekend of release after an already weak opening frame at the box office.
Based on Peter Heller’s bestselling novel of the same name from 2012, The Dog Stars follows a pilot, Hig (Elordi), and a survivalist, Bangley (Brolin), as they venture into treacherous surroundings after they receive a mysterious radio transmission. Qualley plays a medic, Cima, while Guy Pearce also stars as her former Navy SEAL father, Jack.
Produced by 20th Century Studios, The Dog Stars got off to a rough opening weekend at the box office, earning $7.7 million from 3,330 North American theaters Aug. 28-30 against a net $70 production budget (via Deadline) before marketing costs. Unfortunately for The Dog Stars, its second weekend in theaters — which is extended a day thanks to Labor Day on Monday — isn’t looking any better.
According to Deadline, The Dog Stars is projected to make $2.5 million through Sunday —$3.5 million over the four-day holiday weekend — which marks a 64% drop in business from its first three-day frame. If the projection holds, The Dog Stars — which opened at No. 5 at the domestic box office on its first weekend — will tumble, best-case scenario, to the No. 9 spot in its second frame.
Currently, Sony Pictures/Crunchyroll’s Akira is also projected by Deadline to earn $3.5 million through Monday, so, depending on the final domestic tally, it’s conceivable that either The Dog Stars or Akira drops to the No. 10 slot.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Holds Top Spot At Domestic Box Office For 6th Straight Week
Columbia Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which became only the second film in history on Friday to cross the $900 million mark at the domestic box office, Columbia’s parent company Sony Pictures Entertainment reported.
The good news for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to continue throughout Labor Day weekend, as Sony projects the film will earn $17.2 million through Sunday and $22 million through Monday to take the No. 1 spot at the box office for the sixth straight week. Should the projection hold, it will boost Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s running tally to $922 million through Monday.
Deadline projects that Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey will finish for the sixth consecutive week at No. 2 domestically with a holiday weekend tally of $16.4 million. Should the projection hold, it will boost the running domestic tally for the Universal Pictures release to $588.1 million.
Ketchup Entertainment’s live-action and animated hybrid Coyote vs. Acme is projected by the trade publication to finish at No. 3 with an $11.5 million domestic take through Sunday ($14.5 million through Monday), upping its running stateside tally to $37 million.
In addition, Deadline projects the Paramount Pictures’ Civil Rights thriller, By Any Means — starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg — to open at No. 4 with $7 million through Sunday and $8.5 million through Monday.
The horror thriller Insidious: Out of the Further is projected by Sony Pictures to earn $6 million through Sunday and $7.5 million through Monday. Should the projection hold, it will boost the film’s running tally to $55 million.
