The Boston Red Sox made another consequential decision in the career of a former New York Yankees rookie catcher, dealing him to his third American League East division team in the last two years.
The trade was especially notable because the player had only recently arrived in Boston after coming through the New York Yankees organization. His rise from a minor league catcher to a legitimate major league contributor made his departure a difficult one for the Red Sox and an intriguing addition for the Baltimore Orioles, who sent their own star backstop to the Red Sox to acquire him.
Ultimately, Carlos Narvaez’s time in Boston ended with an emotional goodbye.
“I was crying,” he told MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “Because I realized how much love I have for Boston. But it’s a business. … Super, super thankful for that opportunity. Boston will always be in my heart.”
From New York Yankees Start To Boston Red Sox Breakout
Narvaez’s path through the American League East made his eventual move to Baltimore even more interesting. The Yankees added him to their 40-man roster before the 2024 Rule 5 Draft, and he reached the majors that season after spending much of his development in the organization.
His first major league opportunity was brief, but he eventually made his MLB debut in July 2024 after being recalled following an injury to Jose Trevino. The Yankees then traded him to Boston that December in a deal that also included minor league pitcher Elmer Rodriguez and international signing bonus money.
The move turned into a major opportunity for Narvaez.
“Narvaez enjoyed a breakout season in 2025 after Boston acquired him from the Yankees at the 2024 Winter Meetings,” Smith added. “He fought to make the team out of spring training, then emerged as Boston’s starting catcher during the first month of the season.”
Narvaez eventually appeared in 118 games for Boston in 2025, hitting .241 with 15 home runs and 50 RBI. That production helped establish him as a legitimate major league catcher rather than simply another former Yankees prospect.

That development became particularly significant when Boston ultimately included Narvaez in its blockbuster trade with Baltimore for Adley Rutschman.
Rutschman had been one of the defining players of the Orioles’ recent era, making Narvaez’s arrival in Baltimore an unenviable assignment.
“Trading Rutschman, the soul of the clubhouse, was a shock for his teammates, especially the other members of the young core and the pitching staff,” Jacob Calvin Meyer wrote for the Baltimore Sun. “In that trade, though, the Orioles got back an MLB-caliber catcher who would be replacing Rutschman in Baltimore — an impossible job.”
Still, Baltimore needed a major league catcher to take over immediately.
For Narvaez, the trade represents another unexpected chapter in a career that has taken him through three AL East organizations. For Boston, meanwhile, losing a player who had worked his way from the Yankees’ system into a starting role carries an added sting.
