When it comes to team golf, there are two main events for golfers who call the PGA Tour their choice of competitive golf. There is the Ryder Cup, where Team United States goes head-to-head vs. Team Europe. And then there is the Presidents Cups, where Team United States squares off vs. the International team.
These two events come every other year, and in 2026 it is a Presidents Cup year. While the Presidents Cup doesn’t carry the history and competitiveness of the Ryder Cup, it is a tremendous event in the waning months of the calendar year.
This year the United States team is captained by Brandt Snedeker and the International team captained by Geoff Ogilvy. When it comes to the selections for their respective teams, there are two types of qualifiers.
- Players who automatically qualify due to their point totals accrued.
- Players who are captains choices.
Both teams have rounded out their teams ahead of the event on September 24–27, 2026 at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois. For both teams, there was little fan fare surrounding the automatic qualifiers, but captain’s choices were certainly scrutinized by their respective fan bases.

Unlike the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup started in 1994 with a competition held at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Prince William County, Virginia, USA. Through the 25-plus-year journey, the world’s best players have come together to compete for team, country and the honor of raising the Presidents Cup trophy.
The scoring system of the event is match play. The format is drawn from the Ryder Cup and consists of 12 players per side. Each captain is responsible for choosing the pairs in the doubles events, which consist of both alternate shot and best ball formats (also known as “foursomes“ and “fourball“ matches respectively). Each match, whether it be a doubles or singles match, is worth one point with a half-point awarded to each team in the event of a halved match.
There have been frequent small changes to the format, although the final day has always consisted of 12 singles matches. The contest was extended from three days to four in 2000. In 2015, there were nine foursome doubles matches, nine fourball doubles matches, and 12 singles matches. With a total of 30 points, a team needed to get 15.5 points to win the Cup.
As an event, the overall score for these two teams are as follows:
- United States – 13
- International – 1
- Tie – 1
Since the tie in 2003, the United States has won every Presidents Cup following, and hope to keep that streak alive in 2026.
