Supergirl, a DC superhero adventure starring Milly Alcock, arrives on HBO Max this week after the film flopped in theaters.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl opened in theaters on June 26 before premiering on digital streaming via premium video on demand on July 28. Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, who appeared in a cameo at the end of 2025’s Superman, starring David Cornenswet as the Man of Steel.
Supergirl finds Kara teaming with a young ally, Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), on a mission of vengeance and justice as they seek the ruthless villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), after he murders Ruthye’s parents and gravely injure Kara’s dog, Krypto. Corenswet plays a small supporting Supergirl, which also features Jason Momoa as the mercenary Lobo, and David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Kara’s parents, Zor-El and Alura.
Originally titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Supergirl woefully underperformed in its domestic box office debut June 26-28, earning $37 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office — far below pre-release projections of $55 million. North American ticket sales went from bad to worse for Supergirl with a disastrous a 77% dive in the film’s second week of release.
By the time Supergirl wrapped up its domestic box office run on Aug. 20, the film earned $72.3 million domestically. Combined with the film’s $54 million in international ticket sales, Supergirl had a worldwide box office tally of $126 million. Supergirl had a production budget of $170 million before marketing expenses, according to Variety.
Supergirl is the second feature film released in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe of movies and TV shows, following 2025’s Superman. Next up on the DC movie slate is Clayface, which is due for an Oct. 23 release, followed by the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, which is slated to premiere on July 9, 2027.
