Ethereum Sets 2029 Quantum-Resistance Target With Hegotá Roadmap

The Ethereum Foundation has outlined a new set of protocol priorities, grading 62 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) for the upcoming Hegotá upgrade. Under the updated roadmap, the main goal is to make Ethereum fully quantum-resistant by December 2029.

Ethereum identifies two cornerstone upgrades

Ethereum’s Protocol cluster, comprising around 60 researchers and engineers across nine teams, evaluated 62 proposals and assigned them to different priority tiers. Only two EIPs received the highest S-tier rating, meaning they define the Hegotá upgrade and would be prioritized even if timelines need to be adjusted.

FOCIL, or Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists, aims to strengthen Ethereum’s censorship resistance by giving users a guaranteed path to include eligible transactions without relying on block builders. The proposal seeks to reduce the influence of centralized entities in transaction ordering.

The second “must-ship” proposal, Frame Transactions, introduces a new transaction structure that separates authorization, fee payment, and execution. A key feature of the upgrade is that it will allow users to pay gas fees with tokens such as stablecoins while enabling more flexible wallet designs.

Outside of the two “must-ship” proposals, fifteen are expected to ship while 28 proposals were declined. The remaining proposals will be reconsidered based on testing results and available development capacity.

Hegotá is Ethereum’s next major network upgrade, bringing together a package of protocol changes designed to improve the blockchain’s scalability, security, and censorship resistance. Rather than introducing a single feature, the upgrade bundles multiple EIPs that modify how Ethereum processes transactions and reaches consensus.

Ethereum sets a December 2029 quantum deadline

Beyond Hegotá, Ethereum has established a broader objective to quantum-proof the network by the end of the decade. Ethereum Foundation teams will focus on making the network’s execution, consensus and data layers resistant to future quantum-computing threats by December 2029.

The timeline aligns with migration targets set by major technology companies including Google, Microsoft and Cloudflare, which are already gearing up for post-quantum cryptography. Ethereum researchers argue that waiting for certainty around a potential “Q-Day” would leave the network exposed.

“Shipping post-quantum readiness early is the secure thing to do. It is the clearest signal we can send that Ethereum intends to exist 50, 100, and 1,000 years from now,” said the Ethereum Foundation.

Several Hegotá proposals directly support Ethereum’s quantum-proofing objectives. EIP-8365, which begins retiring cryptographic keys vulnerable to quantum attacks, received an A-tier ranking. Frame Transactions, one of the two S-tier proposals, creates a framework that can allow Ethereum to adopt multiple post-quantum signature schemes over time. 

Meanwhile, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has expressed confidence in Bitcoin and Ethereum’s capacity to stave off security threats from artificial intelligence (AI).
