TLDR

  • Coinbase has restored the Coinbase Wallet name after more than a year operating as Base App
  • The platform now emphasizes multichain trading functionality over its previous social application ambitions
  • Support extends across 11 blockchain networks, with recent integrations including Robinhood Chain and Monad
  • Hyperliquid-powered perpetual contracts deliver access to 290+ markets featuring leverage up to 50x for qualifying traders
  • Users can access tokenized equities, prediction markets, and diverse crypto assets, subject to regional availability

After just over twelve months, Coinbase has reversed course on its Base App branding, returning to the Coinbase Wallet name while abandoning its social platform aspirations in favor of multichain decentralized finance and trading capabilities.

The rebrand to Base App happened in July 2025, when Coinbase positioned the product as an all-encompassing super app that would integrate trading, payment rails, messaging functionality, social content feeds, and miniature applications all centered on the Base layer-2 blockchain.

The strategy failed to gain traction. During March remarks, CEO Brian Armstrong admitted the social experiment “didn’t quite work.” Base founder Jesse Pollak subsequently confirmed that creator-oriented tools underperformed expectations and that appetite for social features had “disintegrated completely.”

By July, Pollak transferred app leadership to Jordan “Cobie” Fish while redirecting his attention exclusively to developing the Base blockchain infrastructure.

The wallet now carries its original branding again, accompanied by a strategic repositioning. Coinbase frames Coinbase Wallet as a self-custody gateway to what the company describes as an “everything exchange.”

Ryan Kass, who leads Coinbase Wallet Product development, characterized the application as an experimental “test kitchen” for financial products and digital assets unavailable through Coinbase’s traditional centralized platform. Kass emphasized the organization’s capacity for rapid iteration and strategic pivots when initiatives underperform.

Hyperliquid Perpetuals Lead the Trading Push

The centerpiece of the updated offering is perpetual futures functionality through Hyperliquid integration. Coinbase incorporated this capability in August, enabling qualified traders to access over 290 derivative markets with leverage reaching 50x on select instruments.

The perpetual contracts span cryptocurrency, equity, and commodity underlying assets. Hyperliquid handles trade execution while users control their positions via the Coinbase interface.

Geographic restrictions exclude traders in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada from accessing this feature. US-based customers can utilize a distinct regulated futures offering through Coinbase Financial Markets, which operates under Commodity Futures Trading Commission registration.

Following the rebrand, Coinbase Wallet now facilitates transactions across 11 blockchain ecosystems: Base, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, Monad, and Robinhood Chain. The Monad and Robinhood Chain integrations represent fresh additions.

Tokenized Stocks and Prediction Markets

Qualified international users gain access to tokenized equity products through Coinbase Wallet. Last August, Coinbase introduced four tokenized American stocks on Base, representing Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet.

These tokens maintain 1:1 backing and originate from a Coinbase-affiliated entity operating within the Abu Dhabi Global Market framework. They lack registration under United States securities regulations and cannot legally be distributed to US citizens.

The wallet also incorporates prediction market functionality. Coinbase Financial Markets contends these products belong under CFTC jurisdiction, though certain state regulators disagree. In August, a federal court rejected Coinbase’s request for protection from enforcement actions initiated by Michigan authorities.

The wallet automatically displays all tokens created on compatible blockchain networks. Coinbase employs an automated detection mechanism that conceals tokens associated with fraudulent schemes or malicious activities.

Emerging asset categories including tokenized securities and prediction markets undergo “vigorous product and compliance reviews” prior to platform integration.

Coinbase generates income through transaction and service fees within the wallet environment, though the company has not publicly shared fee schedules or disclosed whether the trading-centric approach has expanded the user base.
