The 78th Primetime Emmys kicked off at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. One series is in the running for a whopping 19 nominations, and if it wins, its creator becomes only the sixth woman ever to take the category as sole creator of her own show.
Her name is Katie Dippold, and horror comedy Widow’s Bay is a reported 82% favorite by prediction market Kalshi.
So who is Katie Dippold? She wrote The Heat, the all-female Ghostbusters, Snatched and Haunted Mansion, elevating the stardom of Hollywood elites like Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer and Kristen Wiig. Tonight, for the first time, the name on the screen is her own.
Katie Dippold’s Widow’s Bay Best Comedy Emmy Odds
Widows Bay has no male co-creator. Dippold has no writing partner, nor a showrunner she inherited it from. Instead, she sold the show, cast it, wrote season one, and is the sole name on the ballot. Many Emmy roundups shortcut her to “former Parks and Recreation writer.” Yet to do so flattens her story by 18 years.
From the FBI reject pile to UCB.
In a recent interview with W Magazine, she shared how she didn’t set out for a career in comedy writing. Instead, this young Rutgers graduate applied to the CIA and the FBI, only to be rejected by both because by her own introspection she believes she “tried too many drugs.” She found solace in improv, joining the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York alongside Amy Poehler and Adam McKay.
In February 2012, while writing on Parks and Recreation, she sold a spec to producer Peter Chernin for $600,000. Paul Feig signed on to direct. It became ‘The Heat,’ which grossed $229.9 million at the box office.
How Widow’s Bay Got Made: 18 Years From Spec to Apple TV
Perhaps the most interesting twist in the overnight success that is Widows Bay is that Dippold almost sold early to Amazon in 2013. However, her gut told her to pull it back. “I just had this bad feeling. I put a pin in it,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. Apple TV ordered it in September 2024. It premiered April 29, 2026, holds 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was renewed in June with a multi-year Apple deal.
A win tonight would make Dippold the sixth-ever female winner: Susan Harris for The Golden Girls in 1987, Diane English for Murphy Brown in 1990, Tina Fey for 30 Rock, Amy Sherman-Palladino for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag. That’s a total of six women in 74 years.
