TLDR

  • Ripple added Machine Payments Protocol support to version 1.1 of its XRPL AI Starter Kit.
  • The update gives developers another way to enable XRP payments for AI agents and automated services.
  • MPP was developed by Stripe and Tempo for machine-based online payments.
  • Ripple now supports both MPP and x402, giving XRPL developers more payment-standard choices.
  • XRP payment channels can support repeated small payments without recording every request on-chain.

Ripple has updated its XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit to support the Machine Payments Protocol, giving developers another route for XRP payments in AI-powered services. Version 1.1 also adds the Open Wallet Standard, which lets software manage wallets across several blockchains through one interface.

The new release broadens the payment options available to developers building AI agents. RippleX said its goal is to make XRP and RLUSD available wherever developers create payment tools for automated software.

XRP Payments Gain New Developer Route

MPP allows AI agents to pay for services as they use them. A service can send a price, the agent can approve the XRP payments, and the provider can then deliver data, computing power, or another online resource.

Stripe and Tempo created MPP as an open standard for machine-based payments. Ripple had already added support for x402 in June, so developers can now use either standard with the XRP Ledger toolkit.

Ripple wants XRP and RLUSD to work as payment choices inside services that charge software for each request. Developers using MPP can connect those payment flows to the XRP Ledger through the updated starter kit.

The integration may also help projects that start with Stripe and Tempo’s protocol before choosing a blockchain. Those developers can add XRP payments or RLUSD without changing the payment standard they already use.

Payment Channels Target Repeated Transactions

XRP payment channels can support services that charge small amounts many times. An AI agent can place XRP into a channel, complete many paid requests, and approve more spending after each task.

The provider can collect the total later without recording every request on the blockchain. Issued tokens such as RLUSD can support individual payments, while the session-based channel feature still requires XRP under the current setup.

Ripple’s new payment software remains in beta. The company has not named commercial customers using the MPP integration, and it has not released transaction or payment volume linked to the feature.

Stablecoin support for payment channels also depends on a proposed XRP Ledger upgrade. Until that change moves forward, XRP remains the required asset for session-based payments, while RLUSD can continue to serve other supported payment flows for machine commerce.
