APT Price Prediction: Upper Band Kiss at $0.70 — Breakout or Fakeout, the Answer Comes Fast

Confidential APT, Tokenomics Shock, and a Price That’s Finally Waking Up

APT at $0.70 is not a random number — it’s the upper Bollinger Band, and it is where the market is making a decision right now. After months of grinding along sub-$0.60 lows and absorbing a relentless unlock schedule, APT has clawed back 12.46% over the past week and 5% in the last 24 hours alone, and for once the price action is backed by real newsflow rather than hollow speculation.

The catalysts are stacking up. On September 14, the Aptos community approved AIP-140, a sweeping tokenomics overhaul that draws a direct line to Ethereum’s EIP-1559 playbook: a hard supply cap of 2.1 billion APT, a tenfold increase in gas fees with every single fee permanently burned, and staking rewards slashed nearly in half. The Aptos Foundation simultaneously locked and staked 210 million APT — roughly 18% of circulating supply at the time — pulling it out of liquid circulation indefinitely. That is a structural supply shock, and the market has been slow to price it in. Then, on September 18, just one day before this writing, the Aptos Foundation deployed Confidential APT on mainnet — a zero-knowledge proof privacy layer that encrypts transaction amounts while keeping wallet addresses visible for compliance purposes, targeting institutional payroll, treasury operations, and payment confidentiality. This is not vaporware; it went live yesterday.

Add to that the March 2026 joint SEC/CFTC classification of APT as a digital commodity — clearing the path for regulated futures and ETF products — and a Mastercard payments partnership, and you have a Layer-1 that has done more fundamental heavy lifting in six months than most projects manage in three years. Blockchain.news has been tracking Aptos’ institutional trajectory closely, and the September 16 Fed rate hike of 25 basis points to 3.75–4.00% — its first since 2023 — adds a macro wrinkle: risk assets absorbed the move without crumbling, which itself signals underlying bid in crypto markets.

The Technical Setup: Everything Bullish Except the Part That Matters Most Right Now

Strip away the narrative and the chart tells a precise story. APT is trading above its 7-day, 20-day, and 50-day moving averages simultaneously — short-term trend structure is clean and unambiguously constructive. The 200-day SMA at $0.77, however, is the wall that has not been touched from below in months, and it coincides almost exactly with the immediate resistance level. That is a double-stacked ceiling, and the bulls need to eat through it to make this move credible.

The problem is what is happening at exactly this moment: MACD and its signal line are both sitting at $0.0180 with the histogram printing a flat zero. That is momentum exhaustion in real time — the trend is intact but the engine powering it has cut out. When price tags the upper Bollinger Band (%B at 0.99) while MACD goes inert, history says one of two things follows: either a powerful volume-driven breakout blows the band open and launches a sustained move, or price stalls and reverts back toward the middle band near $0.61. The RSI at 63 gives the bulls some room — it is not yet screaming overbought — and the Stochastic at 69/%K still has distance before the 80 ceiling. With the ATR at $0.05, a single daily range swings roughly 7% at current prices, so moves feel bigger than they are. The pivot at $0.72 is the first structural test; a close above it would be a meaningful signal. A rejection that holds below $0.70 by day’s end, on the other hand, turns this into a classic bull trap at the band.

The Order Flow Problem: Smart Money Is Long, But Who’s Actually Selling?

Here is the tension that keeps me from being outright bullish on an immediate break: the positioning data and the flow data are sending contradictory messages. Top traders — the so-called smart money — hold a 2.77 long/short ratio with 73.5% positioned long. Retail mirrors it with a 2.27 ratio. Everyone is leaning the same direction. Yet the taker buy/sell ratio over the past hour sits at 0.78, meaning aggressive market sell orders are outpacing aggressive market buy orders — sell volume of $3.1M versus buy volume of $2.4M. Somebody is actively distributing into this bid.

That conflict gets sharper when you look at open interest, which cratered 24.39% in 24 hours. That is not normal compression — that is significant position closing or forced liquidation. When OI drops that hard while price holds firm, it typically means longs took profit or got stopped out and price is being held up by spot buyers rather than levered futures demand. Spot support is more durable, which is constructive, but it also means the next leg up requires fresh levered capital re-entering the market. The funding rate at a benign 0.0100% tells you the market is not overheated in derivatives terms — there is no crowded long getting squeezed — but the aggressive taker selling into an ostensibly bullish setup demands respect. As covered on Blockchain.news, the September 12 unlock of 14.36 million tokens has been absorbed, which is genuinely positive context, and the next unlock in October is a far smaller 4.5 million tokens — removing a persistent overhead supply pressure point.

Viktoras Karapetjanc at Traders Union flagged the $0.7701 resistance level and a bull target of $0.795 before the current price push materialised, calling the AIP-140 structural reforms the backbone of any sustained move. That view has technical merit, and the fundamental backdrop supports it — but he noted that momentum indicators were neutral, and they still are.

The Probabilistic Map: $0.77 Bull Case vs. $0.65 Bear Case, and Nothing In Between

There are two clean paths from here and no comfortable middle ground.

Bull Case — 55% probability over 7–30 days: APT consolidates between $0.68 and $0.72 over the next 48 to 72 hours, allowing the MACD histogram to turn positive from its current dead zero, OI to rebuild with fresh long positioning, and taker flow to normalize above 1.0. A confirmed daily close above the pivot at $0.72 on expanding volume sets up a run at immediate resistance of $0.77 — which is simultaneously the 200-day SMA. Cracking that level on a weekly close is a regime change for this asset. The 7-day target in this scenario is $0.77; the 30-day target, assuming macro cooperates and no fresh unlock pressure, is $0.84, the strong resistance zone. Invalidation: a close below $0.65 on any day this week.

Bear Case — 45% probability: The MACD histogram stays flat or rolls negative, price fails to close above the upper Bollinger Band ($0.70), and the aggressive taker selling continues to erode the bid. Open interest remaining suppressed after a -24% drop signals that the institutional positioning visible in the long/short ratios is hollow — positional, not conviction-driven. In this scenario APT fades back to the $0.65 immediate support within 5–7 days and, if that gives way, the $0.59 strong support becomes the floor. That level is defensible given AIP-140’s supply mechanics, but it would represent a 16% drawdown from current price. Invalidation of the bear case: a clean daily candle close above $0.72.

The fundamental story for Aptos is structurally better than it has been at any point in 2026 — the tokenomics overhaul, the privacy layer, the commodity classification, and the institutional RWA traction from BlackRock’s BUIDL deployment are real. But good fundamentals do not stop technical exhaustion signals from playing out on a day-trader’s timeframe. The trade here is to watch the $0.70–$0.72 zone with precision. A decisive break and hold above $0.72 is actionable long with a stop at $0.65. A rejection at current levels is a short-term fade, not a fundamental story reversal. Keep reading Blockchain.news for real-time coverage as this setup resolves — because at $0.05 daily ATR and a Fed-driven macro backdrop, it will resolve fast.
