Qualcomm (QCOM) Buys PickNik to Strengthen Robotics and Physical AI Strategy

Qualcomm (QCOM) stock was down about 0.8% in Wednesday premarket trading near $196.65 after closing Tuesday at $198.27. QCOM had risen 2.1% Tuesday and 9.3% on Monday, leaving the stock sharply higher over the past two sessions.

The company announced Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire PickNik, a robotics software specialist focused on motion planning and manipulation. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the acquisition remains subject to customary closing conditions.

The deal is aimed at strengthening Qualcomm’s position in physical AI, where artificial intelligence systems interact directly with machines such as industrial robots, autonomous mobile robots and humanoids.

PickNik Adds Key Robotics Software

PickNik is closely associated with MoveIt, one of the better-known open-source frameworks for robotic manipulation and motion planning. The software helps robots plan movements, avoid collisions and control robotic arms and other moving components.

Qualcomm said MoveIt will be integrated more closely with its Dragonwing robotics platforms following the acquisition. The company also said MoveIt 1 and MoveIt 2 will remain open source and continue supporting third-party hardware.

That point matters because Qualcomm appears to be buying PickNik partly for its developer ecosystem rather than simply absorbing the technology into a closed platform. Keeping MoveIt open could help Qualcomm attract robotics developers while still increasing usage of its own hardware.

PickNik has continued to update MoveIt aggressively. Its latest MoveIt Pro release added new motion-planning and collision-management features, while the broader platform includes hundreds of robot behaviors and tools.

For Qualcomm, the acquisition adds another software layer to its growing robotics stack. Dragonwing already provides processors designed for tasks such as vision, sensor fusion, edge AI inference and real-time robotic control.

Qualcomm Builds Out Its Physical AI Strategy

Qualcomm has been expanding Dragonwing throughout 2026 as it targets industrial and commercial robotics. Its IQ10 Robotics Reference Design, for example, is designed to support autonomous mobile robots, humanoids and industrial systems with up to 700 TOPS of AI performance.

The company also launched newer Dragonwing processors this month aimed at bringing AI and real-time computing into a broader range of industrial and connected devices. Potential uses include machine vision, factory automation and consumer robots.

PickNik could help tie those hardware products more directly to the software developers use to make robots move. Qualcomm described software as a critical link between AI hardware and functional robotic systems, which helps explain the strategic logic behind the deal.

The acquisition also fits Qualcomm’s wider effort to diversify beyond smartphones. The company has increasingly targeted automotive, industrial IoT, PCs, data centers and edge AI as additional growth markets.

Investors still face execution risk. Qualcomm has not disclosed the acquisition price, PickNik’s revenue or how much the transaction could contribute financially, making it difficult to judge the near-term earnings impact.

Competition is another factor, with Nvidia and other semiconductor companies also investing heavily in robotics and physical AI platforms. Qualcomm will need developer adoption of Dragonwing and successful integration of PickNik’s software to turn the deal into meaningful revenue.

For now, the acquisition is more strategic than financial. Qualcomm’s latest confirmed move is an agreement to buy PickNik while keeping MoveIt open source, giving the company a stronger software position as it pushes deeper into robotics and physical AI.
