President Donald Trump sat down for dinner with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Sunday night. The meeting took place after Trump returned to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. It was the first private, one-on-one meeting between the two men.

The dinner comes at a tense moment. Just two days earlier, a federal appeals court rejected Anthropic’s legal challenge over being labeled a supply chain risk by the Pentagon. That ruling means the Defense Department can keep removing Anthropic’s Claude models from its systems.
A Rocky Relationship With the Pentagon
The dispute between Anthropic and the government began in February. Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused Anthropic of endangering national security at the time. Amodei refused to change course, citing concerns that AI tools could be used for mass surveillance or autonomous armed drones.
Despite the legal fight, Sunday’s dinner is being seen as a sign that relations between Anthropic and the White House may be thawing. Axios reported that Trump personally extended the invitation. This happened after Amodei missed a state dinner the week before that was attended by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Google’s Sundar Pichai.
One senior administration official told Axios that some resistance existed inside the White House before the meeting. “Dario’s a little too weird for Trump,” the official said. A separate White House official said the administration’s position remains firm on AI leadership paired with consumer protection.
Sunday’s dinner also comes just two days before a larger AI industry event. Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are set to meet with top AI executives at the White House on Tuesday. That makes the private dinner a lead in to the bigger discussion.
Growing Public Concern Over AI Safety
Amodei has been vocal about the pace of AI development in recent weeks. He said the industry should slow down to let safety measures catch up. He warned that without a slowdown, AI systems could become capable of directing swarms of agents able to take over the internet within six to twelve months.
Amodei raised similar concerns on September 23 when he briefed the United Nations Security Council. He appeared alongside executives from OpenAI and Hugging Face. He told the council that AI could pose a risk to humanity as a whole if it is not managed carefully.
Trump has taken a different public stance on AI risk. He has told the United Nations General Assembly that he rejects what he called a globalist scheme to control AI. He has also said the United States must stay ahead of China in AI development.
Public opinion shows real worry about the technology. A Reuters and Ipsos poll found that 73% of Americans believe AI companies are not doing enough to prevent serious harm. That concern is landing ahead of the November midterm elections.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also weighed in over the weekend. In an interview aired Sunday, Gates called for Congress to pass legislation rather than relying on the AI industry to regulate itself. Gates said he wants to meet with Trump to discuss AI policy directly, according to Reuters.
